I forgot to add that i had my dog with me when i visited and he received just as warm a welcome as i did, with a bowl of water waiting and the occasional treat to keep him happy.

Exactly what a local pub should be, nice looking old building, good choice of Cask Marque ales with at least 2 guest ales on all the time, cracking breakfasts for a fiver, good home cooked food at lunch and friendly locals and good old fashioned service in the evening. Add in a live band every Friday and some Saturdays, nice beer garden (although next to a road it's actually quite quiet), log fire in the winter and BBQ's in the summer and you're on to a winner. Sure, the beer is a little pricier than soul-less chain pubs like spoons or yates etc but this is the price we pay these days for a good pint and a bit of personality behind the bar. I think it's unfair to label bar staff or the land lady as rude because they expect a please and thank you instead of grunts...
