The Silver Cross, Whitehall

There was a good choice of well-kept ales, and the service was friendly and quick, even on a packed Friday evening. However, the pub is a bit lacking in the atmosphere dept, probably because it is spread out over such a big area.

The Camden Head, Islington

Nice pint of IPA. Good poetry night upstairs on Thursdays.

The Blue Bottle, Crystal Palace

Equally enjoyable for a late night session or leisurely daytime quaffing. Lots of space out front which is good during the summer.

The Black Bull, Whetstone

Good choice of ales. Spacious, with outside seating front and back. Friendly and efficient barstaff.

The Kings Head, Islington

I have been coming to the Kings Head on and off over the last 10-15 years or so, and was surprised to read some of the derogatory comments posted recently. I've always thought this is one of the best, if not the best pub in North London (and I've visited a few).

Having revisited it last week I am relieved to report that nothing has changed. The staff were most obliging, the Adnams was very good, an excellent blues band provided the music. The decor, and more importantly, the clientele, have character - a quality severely lacking in many of the various chain pubs that have sadly now colonised Upper Street.

Long live the Kings!

The Marquis of Granby, New Cross

Genuine Irish boozer. Great atmosphere and friendly bar staff. Serves a couple of decent ales as well. Good for watching the racing.

The Blue Eyed Maid, Borough

Friendly and helpful bar staff. Good beer.

The Elephant Inn, North Finchley

Let itself down a bit last Friday by playing Michael Jackson ALL NIGHT.

The Tally Ho, North Finchley

I came here on a Friday night and it there were a lot of drunk teenagers, plus an "oldies" table. There was a bit of kicking-off potential. However, I found the service very good and the ales well-kept.

The Elephant Inn, North Finchley

This is a great Fullers pub and has been for most of the past 20 years I've been acquainted with it (and probably long before that).

Just one thing though. It should change its name back to the Moss Hall Tavern as that is what everyone still knows it as.

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

I disagree with the disparaging comments about the Sam Smiths beer. The stout is very good. The bitter is average but certainly quaffable, and the prices are very good value for Central London.

I've always thought there's a good atmosphere in here, downstairs as well as up, but they are sometimes short-staffed and you can wait a while to be served. It's shocking what happened to Melanie (below)though. Unfortunately there are a few unsavoury elements around this area, but you should be able to go into a pub on your own without having to worry about being attacked. The pub management should consider employing security instead of putting the onus on you.

The Foundry, Shoreditch

The organic beer is very good. The clientele is young(ish) and arty. Music is a bit hit and miss but not predictable. Good atmosphere.

The Sanctuary House, Westminster

Good service, well-kept Fullers ales. Gets very busy with suits on a Friday evening.

The Albert Arms, Elephant and Castle

Good pub to while away a sunny afternoon outside, although outside seating is limited. Ale (London Pride and Bombadier) was well-kept and service good when I visited early on Friday evening.

The Windmill, Brixton

This is a great, intimate, down-to-earth music venue, with good bar service. This place has real character, even if it does look like an old scout hut from the outside. Shame there don't seem to be any ales available, but apart from that it's a refreshing change from run-of-the-mill corporate venues. I dunno what time the bar stays open to but they were still serving when we left round about midnight on Friday, so seems like a good place for a lateish drink if you're in the area.
