The Bear Inn, Faversham

It was better when Chris and Marie ran it (now running The George at Newnham). If you like twee chamber pots hanging from every beam, and bits of fancy brass on every surface, with naff micro-light fronds glowing in the corners once you've run the gauntlet of smokers lounging outside - this is for you. A lovely late Tudor pub is now a junk shop with beer.

The Albion Taverna, Faversham

Used to come here because the pub, concentrating mostly on food rather than drink, was pretty much all non-smoking. Beer fairly indifferently kept, and following the general Shep's rules, the building was getting a bit shabby and the last time I visited, in February, was freezing. The woman sitting at the next table to me was wearing a sheepskin jacket and was still cold! Last time we ate the food was OK, but the corn on the cob was cold (!) and had garlic butter on it which was pretty unpleasant. Best to visit in summer when you can sit on the Brents and watch the ducks and swans in the Creek.

The Elephant, Faversham

Having been ignored while waiting to be served at most of the pubs in Faversham, I can almost sympathise with firebrand - but you must have been there on 'off' nights, because I've not had any trouble at the Elephant since the new landlord and landlady took over and shook it up. The only pub in Faversham I'd choose to drink at, really. Great garden, nice decor, music is in the background. OK, I'd get rid of the games machine and get less salty peanuts in, but overall, a good pub.

Market Tavern, Durham

Beers may be good - had an excellent selection of pump plaques, but the food was easily the worst I have ever bought (and it must have been bad because I left it!)
