The Hammersmith Ram, Hammersmith

Some of the best Youngs in London here. First pint I ever had was in here aged 13 and, 13 years later, it's one of my favourite locals. Youngs and Pride both excellent, decent wine, occasional gig sessions and professional staff who sometimes border on being friendly. Outside area for smokers has tables, chairs and heaters. A real winter pub and a complete mix of locals.

The Blue Posts, Piccadilly

Nice little haven to escape the mania of Pic Circus. Solid beer - Price and T Taylor both reliable - and the landlord is always cheery and friendly. Some of his staff couldn't speak much English when I last went a few months ago, which didn't really matter, except when he thought I'd ordered a *pint* of Bushmills and began to empty the bottle!

The Golden Eagle, Bond Street

An absolute gem, with the most miserable barman in history. He's actually quite chatty when not behind the bar, and his scowly face only adds to the atmosphere. Fantastic Guinness and London Pride - a little more expensive than others, but it has some of the best atmosphere you'll find. The pianist (usually the same two) does old classics - 1940s-1960s! - and there's sometimes a singalong to Sinatra or Vera Lynn. Not as corny as it sounds; you get pensioners here as well as us young bucks in our twenties, and that's what a pub should be. Stools outside for smokers; good range of seats (sofas for the romantics), small and cosy. I go out of my way most weeks to pop in.

The Tudor Rose, Marylebone

Reliable, friendly, welcoming pub, if a bit overpriced. "One for the road" type of place; we usually have our second pint in here, then move on, but it's a great little place. The Pride varies, but is mostly fine. Varied, eclectic crowd.
