The Castle Inn, Colchester

Extremely unfriendly bar staff, very expensive drinks, disgusting toilets. Avoid like the plague.

V Bar, Colchester

No idea what pub the other reviewers have been going to, but this is by far the worst pub in Colchester. Crammed full of underage sixth formers and drunken slags, an obnoxious DJ who talks over all the songs, and the toilets are covered in either blood, vomit or both. Steer well clear.

The White Horse, Diss

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

The Phoenix, York

Recently refurbished, reopened, and very nice! They also do jazz nights once a week, sundays I think.

The Lowther Hotel, York

Grim. Smells like a toilet. Feels like there's going to be a pub brawl constantly.

Waffles Bar, Colchester

Very nice, friendly atmosphere, interesting cocktails (The 'Die Hard' - 15, 15 shots of different spirits!) and great film-based decor.

Silk Road Lounge and Cocktail Bar, Colchester

Nice decor, quite expensive. You can smoke a shisha pipe in the smoking area for about 7.

The Odd One Out, Colchester

Looks like a complete dive from the outside- it's a locals' secret and they want to keep it that way. Quite nice inside with a fireplace and beer garden. Often have very good ciders. Unfriendly staff- make sure you don't get your mobile out while you're in there or you'll be told to "take it outside" quite aggressively.

The Grapes, Colchester

Nice local pub, friendly, welcoming and cheap. Good place to watch the football.

The George Hotel, Colchester

Very nice interior for Colchester. Expensive as can be expected but very nice.

The Fat Cat, Colchester

Great selection of drinks, but a bit expensive. Friendly atmosphere.

Fashion Cafe Bar, Colchester

The only place in Colchester with table football. Quite cheap and friendly staff.

5 Feb 2009 18:17

Dragoon, Colchester

Very unfriendly staff. Good selection of ales.

Curve, Colchester

Utterly dead when I went in- literally no more than 2 or 3 people there. Do have a couple of pool tables and big TVs. If it's got more people in it it might be alright.

Colchester Arts Centre, Colchester

Fantastic venue that attracts quite big acts due to it's unique atmosphere- it's a converted church and feels that way. The beer festivals are fantastic also.

The Nags Head, York

On a student night out it's a good place to get drunk. Trebles are 3.75. Tuesday evenings it is virtually impossible to move around, you have to swim through the bodies. Good for endrunkening and meeting people before heading off to Tru. Not good for much else.

5 Feb 2009 18:11

Rumours, York

Owned by the same management as Nag's Head next door, and is pretty much the same- yet strangely it's quite a bit more expensive. Nice upstairs outdoor seating area with heaters.

5 Feb 2009 18:09

The Artful Dodger, York

Very cramped, crap drinks selection and unfriendly staff.

5 Feb 2009 18:08

Reflex, York

Great when you're drunk. If you're sober you'll notice the abnormal amount of large bald men ogling all the students.

5 Feb 2009 18:07

Charles XII, Heslington

100% student bar, and great for it. Not an awful drinks selection, but importantly it's cheap. The food is great for the ridiculously cheap price (cheaper than Spoons) and comes in massive portions. Mondays are slightly cheaper drinks nights and get very crowded for it.

5 Feb 2009 18:01

The Deramore Arms, Heslington

Decent selection of drinks- including Old Rosie on tap, but it's extortionately expensive and has next to no atmosphere compared to the Charles XII next door.

5 Feb 2009 17:59

Dusk, York

Decent, small cocktail bar. Their 'Milky Bar Kid' cocktail is amazing- like a chocolatey white russian.

5 Feb 2009 17:57

The Golden Fleece, York

Extremely expensive, nice furnishings. Leave this one to the tourists though.

5 Feb 2009 17:55

The Rook and Gaskill, York

One of the best pubs in York. An enormous selection of ales on tap- something like 14 ales on hand pumps at any one time. They hold excellent beer festivals as well. They don't really like students in there unless you're a sensible, ale drinker. If you come in and order a vodka and coke you will likely be drawn and quartered. The back room's a bit dingy.

5 Feb 2009 17:54

Brigantes Bar and Brasserie, York

Great selection of ales, very reasonably priced.

5 Feb 2009 17:50

The Ackhorne, York

Great pub just off Micklegate for if you don't fancy the usual student haunts on a night out. Friendly with students as well as locals. Decent ale selection, plus Weston's Old Rosie cider on tap (though expensive).

5 Feb 2009 17:49

The Kings Arms, York

A nice, very small Sam Smiths pub- popular with locals as well as students. Very cheap- 1.55 a pint for the bitters, 1.70 for the alpine lager. They keep the ales far too cold though.
