The Maidenhead Inn, Basingstoke

Has recently aquired a bright young new manager with a great track record, Watch this space. Standards will improve astronomically at The Maidenhead Inn.

The Orange Tree Inn, Kirkby Lonsdale

Yes, it is a food house but also a good real ale venue. This pub could increase its turnover if only the management could recognise their market. Food outlets tend to attract the older clientelle, and as such should play music that is appropriate to that age group. The night we were in there was no evidence of a licensee / DPS, just a couple of young lads behind the bar playing loud 'rap/ garage', or whatever that 'crud' is called, and the punters were leaving 'at a fair rate of knots'. Had they played some 70's / 80's and 90's they would have stayed and bought some beer. This is what happens when there is little or no supervision.

The John O'Gaunt, Lancaster

Nice to see the old place getting back on its feet. Just one small 'whinge'. I went in for last orders; bought a pint, sat down only to be surrounded by chairs being put on top of tables. I felt about as welcome as 'a turd at a swimming gala'.Nice beer ,though; just a pity I wasn't able to enjoy it 'at my leisure'.

The Jolly Crofters, Horwich

Taken over by Trendy Pubco -Orchid Group-who's website is full of buzzwords and 'Licensed Retail Newspeak',but in reality it is just another crap Managed Pub.Bank Holiday Monday,Blundell Arms 'packed to the rafters',very few customers in The Crofters,,no wine list, crossings out on the menus, poorly trained staff, small portions,no visible signs of management-unless it was the scruffy pair in 'tracky bottoms' and 'T' shirts, stops serving food at 8:30 but takes the menus off the tables at quarter past, refused two customers at 8:20 who came in for food -they went up to The Blundell-along with everyone else.

Shepherds Arms, Colne

This Pub has changed Management ,and is now being run by a Professionally Trained and Well Qualified Couple. Beer Quality is Top Priority now,and Rachel and Simon are both keen Cellarmen...........persons.......people!!!!(can't do this PC crap). They are putting 'The Shepherds'back on the map-with trade increasing week -by- week. They also care about their Customers and are building a strong Local Following in the town;and most important of all-they don't tolerate 'Idiots,Morons, Mongs etc, making the pub a safer place for a good night out without having to worry about 'making eye contact 'with 'Dickhead'. Enjoy!!!!!!!

The Robert Gillow, Lancaster

Unlike The John O'Gaunt,Hydes have let this puib to someone who is prepared to 'work'.Jamie puts in 100 hours per week and maybe more;he deserves the success he appears to be having. It looks like he has picked up many of the 'John's'punters, including me.The story's always the same:Pubco lets pub to inexperienced Lesee, inexperienced lessee 'puts Manager in'-walks away from pub to wait for the money, pub goes down the pan -Pubco repeats the process. This hasn't happened at 'The Gillow' QED.

The George, Torrisholme

A Thwaits' 'managed' house with no manager behind the bar-well I've never seen him pull a pint.It was always a popular pub when it was a tenancy, with the man and wife team keeping the 'punters' happy, and taking the money themselves as opposed to sitting on a barstool watching the staff do all the work.

The Hoghton, Withnell

A rather 'tired'Regional Brewer's attempt at a themed 'out of town' food pub.The prices are reasonable, but the term 'you get what you pay for'certainly applies here-but a great place to 'feed the kids'.The wine is good value at 7/8 quid a bottle-unlike The Royal Oak up the road screwing the punters for' Jacobs Creek' a snip at 13 quid a knock......I don't think.
