Miller of Mansfield, Goring

Came here for lunch one glorious Saturday in October, a perfect day for sitting outside like some of the other customers and enjoying just some of the best food around. Beautifully presented sausage and mash with chorizo was a dream, washed down with a juicy red served in the most exquisite glasses. Service was attentive and friendly. The restaurant indoors looks interesting, as do the 14 rooms pictured on the website.

The Black Lion, Appledore

Stopped by after walking from Rye on Easter Sunday afternoon. The place was heaving with customers enjoying substantial roast dinners, but we opted for a pudding and a cup of tea outside in the sunshine.Delicious and well-presented, and not too long a wait either. Will definitely be going back!

The Spotted Dog, Penshurst

Dined here on a Saturday evening. Unlike the Bottle House down the road, it has its own car park. Lots of odd tables and chairs confirm its gastropub status, and the staff are friendly, courteous and efficient. Good bread and olives for 1 if you don't feel like a starter, but if you, the Welsh rarebit and stuffed field mushrooms were delicious.
Less so the main courses, especially the lamb shanks which could have done with at least another hour in the oven. The steak wasn't that great either. But a good wine list which does not try and rip you off.

The Castle Inn, Chiddingstone

Five of us were walking in the area and rang up to reserve a table for lunch. The bar area is tiny, and so arriving in good time we had a drink while choosing our lunch from the menu - the set price two-course lunch at 9.95 is good value. Despite a full restaurant on the Saturday before Mother's Day we were well looked after by the head waiter. The food is well-cooked and attractively presented - not huge portions admittedly. Some of the main courses were a little salty, however. Lovely location opposite the church, and rumour has it that it's been sold...
