The Ship, Rotherhithe

No atmosphere as no people! Trying to hard to be a " Gastro Pub" in a local area. This used to be a great pub but unfortunatly the refurb and the massive hike in prices has kept everyone away.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

Still like the pub but the service has dropped off, no beer mat given at the bar, for your beer and had to ask for the bar to be wiped. Beer in good condition but the price keeps us from going there as often as we would like.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

What an improvement!! Cozy atmosphere, great service from the Aussie guy behind the bar. Seems to have enticed customers back after the last terrible landlord. Only complaint, still very expensive and dont really like having babies in buggies in pubs.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Just returned from the US what a difference a new Landlord makes!!
It's back to being a great pub.
Yes the locals are going back but a bit pricey to drink there all the time.
With all the pubs closing and The Ship getting a new and totaly useless Landlord this is a great improvement to the area. We will definatley be locals again!

The Ship, Rotherhithe

The new look is good but what has happened???
Nobody in there, the locals have deserted to a different pub.
Toilets dirty, no music, no heating,no atmosphere!
Went in there Xmas Eve lunchtime 2 people in there, new landlords nowhere to be seen. In the past you couldnt get in the door, it was so busy on Xmas Eve. They need to be on the premises more and make more of an effort.
I hope Youngs see that it needs an experienced pub landlord to run it.
This could be a great pub as nearly all surrounding pubs have closed.

The Hung, Drawn and Quartered, Tower Hill

Does a good job of making a new pub look old. Good beer and great interior, especially if you have oversea visitors.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Hurrah!!! Just like the last post we have avoided The Mayflower due to the miserable and rude landlord but we found out yesterday that it has now changed hands.
We had visitors from the USA and we wanted them to see The Mayflower Ship passenger list, so they could see there ancestors. What a great surprise when we found that things seem to have changed for the better. We had a jug of Pimm's and a couple of pints of Speckled Hen & Guiness on the deck. The place was buzzing and and the staff could speak english!
If we had known we would have eaten there but had already made a resevation at Simplicity, across the road, as we have refused in the past to give The Mayflower our custom. Simplicity as usual was excellent.
We are local and frequented The Mayflower for many years until the last lanlord took over and made a great local pub a chintzy over-priced, unwelcoming establishment. We are looking forward to see how things progress, we have already seen a couple of locals back so we are spreading the good news!!!!!

It's a shame such a great little pub has "modernised". It didnt need it. Please put back the blackboards and get rid of the white paint!

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

This used to be the best place to go for Christmas dinner but as to be expected from the "new" lanlord : no loyalty to his customers..Closed Christmas and New Year!!

The Nags Head, Belgravia

Visited Friday night with friends from US, very busy but managed to get a table after a while. The food was good and thank goodness there were english speaking bar staff!! The lanlord gave our friends a postcard and took the time to speak to them about the Nags Head, they were very impressed. A great location and a pub that is still a pub!!!!

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

We keep trying The Mayflower every now and then to see if has returned to its former glory but no such luck! It seems as if everybody feels the same as in times gone by the place was always packed, if it was a nice day you had to arrive at opening time to get a seat on the deck but it's empty now. No surprise as it's so overpriced, the staff try but dont understand english. When we were there someone ordered half a Stella and half a Guiness, the "barmaid" put them in the same glass!!!!!! I bet even that wouldnt have made the miserable lanlord laugh!

The Grenadier, Belgravia

I have rated this pub as a 7 only because of the location and decor..
We visited Tuesday afternoon after our friends, visiting from the US, had finished at Buck House. We arrived at 2.45 wanting lunch but food service had finished at 2.30 they would not even atempt to offer a sandwich but tried to sell us withered sausages and cold roast potatoes! we were the only people in there but I suppose such a tourist trap doesnt need 8 peoples trade. Poor service like this is very embarrassing when you have people visiting from countries where service is excellent. We asked if there were any post cards etc for sale but they didnt have any. When we tried to take photos we wern't allowed! And as we were the only ones in there it cant be because of any "shy celebrities"! We stayed for one drink anf moved on so they lost an afternoon of trade and we wont be taking more of our friends that have arrived yesterday we will try somewhere more accomodating.

The Sherlock Holmes, Charing Cross

Visited on Tueday afternoon as The Grenadier (in Belgravia) had stopped servibg food 10 mins before we got there and would not even make us a sandwich (8 persons custom lost)!
No tables left so we sat on the "terrace". We had to order the food at the bar, which was ok. Sandwich's and ploughmans very good and the bar maid kept popping up to see if we were ok. Our friemds visiting from the US loved it so it was worth the visit ,at least they were more accomodating than The Grenadier.

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

A nice surprise.
We took American visitors there, feeling a little aprehensive as previuos visits have not been very good, but it was good.
A Tuesday so not too busy but good atmosphere and good service. You can order food up to 10pm, which is a nice change, the food came up very hot and fish & chips were eaten by all!
A great view and talkative locals to inform our visitors of sights and history. The icing on the cake a really good black cab driver to take us home.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

Took our friends that had just arrived from USA. It was Monday so very busy as quiz night, but what great service.
After experiencing lack of service on Sunday at The Chop House, in Butlers Wharf, what a refreshing experience.
The landlady told us we could wait in the garden area and when a table was free she would come and get us, we only waited about 5 mins and we were seated , she continued to fuss around our visitors carrying stools to the table etc and we saw her carry a table into a space for another group of people to sit down. The food was great and we had good fun playing the quiz.
After doing the "tourist thing" The Town of Ramsgate came out tops.
More of the "supposed" lanlords should take a visit to learn how to provide good service!
We cant wait for the East London line to open up again so we can use the TOR again more often.

The Red Lion, Pall Mall

Great little pub. Great Service, friendly landlady. I dont know where "jorrocks" saw all the tourists it's normally full of workers and just a few tourists that have got lost.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Thought we would give The Mayflower another chance. What a mistake. The barmaid could not understand us and had to get help (all I asked for was a pint of IPA and a Bud!!) It was Saturday afternoon and just a few tourists about, probably the only people to go as when you've visited once and experienced the overpriced food and drink and miserable lanlord you dont go again.

12 Feb 2008 18:36

The Mudlark, London Bridge

After reading the last few reviews I decided to take some visiting American tourists to The Mudlark. What a mistake!! The place is filthy. It was the worst food we had in London all week. One of the orders was forgotten so five of us were served our food and the sixth person had there food served after we were finished. The FAMOUS fish platter had ran out (this was on a Monday at 5pm).The food is obviosly microwaved, the deserts were over sapped and rock hard on the bottom. As for the beer- the London Pride you couldnt see through the glass the IPA ran out after 1 pint the other bitter was also "off" leaving only 1 choice left which was awfull. This was such a shame as they were very impressed with the choice of pubs and food in London, they had a great week in London, this was a big let down

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Could be a grat pub ( in fact it used to be.) Drinks very expensive food also overpriced, even though you do get large portions. The main problem is the lanlord, miserable, rude and shouldnt be in the pub game. When I was there last every person qustioned the price of drinks with very rude responses from the lanlord!! Dont give him your business, go elsewhere. Jump on a tube to Wapping try the Town of Ramsgate.
