The Plough, Smallford

great pub, found by us after a long walk along the Alban WAy (reached the pub by walking through a corn field). Very friendly staff, good range of ales, bags of character and good craic. Food wasn't as good as it could have been, though the kitchen had just opened for the evening. If they could improve the quality of the meals then this would get a 10/10.

The Six Bells, St Albans

Lovely, friendly little pub. Good ales, nice staff. If I lived closer to it I'd be there all the time.

The Peahen, St Albans

Went there with some friends for Sunday lunch. Lovely beer garden, and some of the food is good. HOWEVER- unless our complaints were listened to then don't fork out over 8 quid for one of their sunday roasts. Small portions, poor quality veg, and generally not worth the (extortionate) price. The veggie roast option consisted of a sunday roast without the roast and extra soggy carrots. Their cheese platter should also be avoided, unless a lump of processed cheddar and some celery seems a good use of a fiver to you...

The Crown, St Albans

Identikit pub, nothing that really makes it stand out in any way in terms of character or beer choice. However, the staff are very friendly and nice and the prices aren't too bad.

The Fighting Cocks, St Albans

Ok, so it's very family orientated and a bit too "Ye Olde Pubbe" (reminded me of Bill Bailey's Chaucer pubbe gagge), but it has a lovely outdoor space and the food was excellent. It was a good place to take the parents on a sunny afternoon, but not where I'd go for a big night out.

The Bell, St Albans

Have only been there on weekday afternoons when it's been pretty quiet. Very slow service, young clientele. Food is OK but your identikit 2-for-6.95 meals.
