The Three Blackbirds, Boxmoor

Newly refurbed as a Barras house so thought I'd pop along tonight (Friday)
3 handpumps (Tetley, Bombadier and Marstons EPA) - ALL OFF
Poor training? Lazy staff? Who knows, but why go here when Boxmoor has other (better) boozers where you are can get what you want - poor

The Three Horseshoes, Bourne End

Very disappointing trip along to the Horseshoes on Bank Holiday Monday...

I have heard from neighbours that food service can be erratic, but had never experienced it here before.

Me and the missus don't get out that much on account of having a 10-month-old bundle of energy to look after, but treated ourselves to a stroll along the canal for a spot of lunch.

I thought a 50 mins wait for a burger and a panini (we're easily pleased) was more than long enough , whereupon I was told that I would need to re-order as the order had become "lost".

The staff seemed mad busy, and we weren't alone in searching for our food. Whilst everyone else seemed to get sorted we went hungry.

They dealt with the refund a little too well for my liking; perhaps that comes with experience...

I don't ask for much - you take my money, and you bring me my stuff - simple. It's put me off the place a bit

Moan, moan, moan...

The Swan, Whiston

Returning down Mway with friends and kids on a Monday evening in August 08, and this was one of a v few GBG pubs open with food - what a find!!!

Excellent homemade food, lovely ale, friendly and knowledegable staff, and lots to keep the kids happy. Beautiful setting, too.

Well worth searching for!

The Cherry Trees, South Norwood

Great to see them making some sort of effort with the Cherries; were it nor for it being so handy for grabbing a pint before watching Palace (lose), you would seriously have avoided this (I won;t mince my words) dump.

Like Alph, the ratings are in the post.

One question, though; what the Hell did they do with those magnificent chandelierlight things? They were sort of ancient Egyptian in style, and hung about 5 feet down from the ceiling. They were surely, unique, and are a sad loss to the area...

The Three Blackbirds, Boxmoor

I like this pub, but what's happened to the "No Smoking" area? Now, I know you can (for now) still smoke in pubs, but it seems that this pub has a "No No Smoking" policy.

If you are keen to avoid overly smoky pubs, then walk straight past the Blackbirds.

The Grapes, Boxmoor

I used to think this pub was a bit rowdy, but having been in there twice recently, I'd give it the 'thumbs up'. Sky TV now, too, which is a bonus for quiet Monday evenings when your teams match in Stoke has been inexplicably switched! Very well kept London Pride

The Red Lion, St James

Excellent looking pub, quite rightly marked out as such by CAMRA. Decent range of beers, too.

The only real drawback in the past has been the bar staff - invariably Eastern European and attractive, but without the slightly grasp of the English Language which I find incredibly annoying.

The Three Horseshoes, Bourne End

Definitely the most picturesque pub in the Hemel area.
Food can by great, and much better value than in its over-priced past. They can make a pig's ear of it at times, though. Take your chances.

Not too much to sing about beer-wise, but the pub itself and the location go a long way to making up for that.

White Horse, Bourne End

Off the beaten track, but worth a visit for the food and some local ales.
Herts Beer Guide has it down as a youngsters' pub, but that's not the case (not now, anyway).
Well worth checking out

Fishery Inn, Boxmoor

Right mixed reviews of reviews below...

This pub is OK; it serves a decent enough pint and has a wide choice of beers, lagers and wines, and the food is actually pretty good as pub grub goes.

As said, it can be very slow at busy times, and I have been party to being overlooked by bar staff in favour of their friends - bit cheeky. On the whole, though, the staff are pretty good.

It's part of the Ember Inns chain, so has that "young professional" feel about it dcor-wise. That, and the location (right next to the Grand Union Canal and 2 mins walk from Hemel station) make it a bit of a honey pot all year round, which invariably means a good number of "boisterous" characters in attendance. Still, it appeals to all crowds (family meals and gangs of lads alike), so there is something for everyone, if you are happy to put up with your fellow punters.

The Post Office Arms, Boxmoor

Known locally as "The Patch", this popular village local is a Fuller's pub, and has real fires, a rear garden, and a slightly boisterous public bar.
Nice alternative to the other busier pubs in the immediate area

The Golden Lion, Port Isaac

Great local pub that is more than welcoming to the many tourists. With everything else in the village closed out of season, the great beer and food, and the friendliness of the staff and regulars mean there is no reason to stay indoors.
Quiz Night on Sundays, but don't get there too early or you'll be on your ear before it starts!

The Crows Nest, Port Isaac

Is this now called the Crow's Nest?
Big Screen for footy and pool tables make this a functional, fairly charmless barn of a pub.
What with the satellite facilities it doesn;t have to try too hard to get a crowd, and it doesn't try.
If you want charm, try Port Gaverne Hotel or the Golden Lion at Port Isaac harbour
