The Chequers Inn, Binham

Excellent beers & good food in a lovely north Norfolk village. Deserves to be busier.

The Cat Inn, West Hoathly

Whilst it still has a well-used bar and patio area this is very much a dining pub. There was a good selection of local ales in good nick and although the food was pricey it still represented good value for the quality. Service was friendly and efficient. A well run pub/restaurant that deserves its success.

The Oak Inn, Ardingly

A tradional looking pub that offers even more on the inside. Good bar and restaurant with very friendly service. The Harvey's Best was in excellent condition and the home-cooked food was good value and a notch above the usual pub fare. A pub definitely on the up and well worth a visit.

Bridgewater Arms Hotel, Berkhamsted

Set in a beautiful part of Hertfordshire in an attractive village the pub looks perfect from the outside. The bar is fine and as it's a Greene King pub you can expect the usual selection of ales (in my view that's not much of a choice). The food was the worst I'd eaten in a long time. As examples, the king prawns were minute, the cheese (amazing how they managed the same sized portions of each cheese) was frozen and the puddings all had the look and taste of something invented in a chemicals factory.

Avoid this place and choose the Alford Arms and the Valiant Trooper.

The Kilvert's Hotel, Hay on Wye

Good front bar with an excellent ranges of beers, cider & perry all in good nick. Sunday afternoon and only one person serving at the bar and getting food. Not the friendliest of welcomes and all seemed a bit gloomy inside. All in all needs a bit of de-cluttering to get it all up to the standard of the drinks on offer.

The Griffin Inn, Llyswen

Looks attractive from the outside but the welcome could be friendlier and the food is nothing special. Full range of Brains' beers but I'd have rather seen something fron the local Brecon Brewery.

The Golden Heart, Nettleton Bottom

Lovely old pub with well kept Brakspears and a Gloucester local beer. Visited on a BH Monday lunchtime and service was quick and friendly. Food was good and served in good time despite a pub packed with folk eating. Ideal location if you're between Gloucester and Oxford.

The Ring of Bells Inn, North Bovey

Excellent local beers and restaurant quality food topped with a friendly welcome and chat from the manager. As someone mentioned earlier a good circular walk from Moretonhampstead. Good luck to the new staff.

The Anchor Inn, Epney

Luckily found this pub just off the M5. Good food and real ales in an unpretentious pub with Severn-side views. We couldn't have had a friendlier welcome. Well worth taking a break in this seemingly isolated pub just a mile or so from the motorway.

Red Lion, Birchover

Very good range of beers and cider/perry in good nick. Food is very good quality and interesting as the landlord is Italian. Good pubs like this one will always survive - it offers something different and meets most needs (apart from Sky, cheap lager and smoking shelters - thank god).

Flying Childers, Stanton In Peak

Infrequent opening hours (check website for details) but well-deservedlocal CAMRA pub of the year 2012. Good beers and quality home-made food (baps, soup etc.). A classic unspoilt Peak District pub that's well worth a visit. Also sells some local produce as a mini-shop.

The Barley Mow, Bonsall

We arrived dripping wet & muddy from a walk along the Limestone Way. Their Easter weekend beer and music festival was well underway. The beers were in excellent condition with a great range and friendly advice. The pub is rooted in its community, seemed to suit all ages and gave youngsters a great opportunity to play a set. The food was burgers and chips compared to their usual extensive menu. The pub is alive & well as a concept in Bonsall. Friendly chat to one & all. They deserve to do well.

The Duke of York, Elton

Fascinating pub that offers 1950's time travel in a very good way. Completely unspoilt by the usual refurbishment. No food but more importantly a friendly welcome by the landlady and locals and very well-kept Marston's Burton Bitter and Adnams Bitter. Only evenings (late) and Sunday lunchtimes. Well worth a visit, particularly if your prefences are simple pubs, good beer and a friendly chat.

Bowling Green, Winster

Good beers (local brews and Old Peculier) and good solid food in an interesting village. Friendly welcome, whether you're eating or just drinking. Like an increasing number of Peak District pubs it doesn't open on weekday lunchtimes.

The Three Stags Heads, Wardlow Mires

Back again to one of England's finest pubs. This time as well as working our way through the Abbeydale range we enjoyed the excellent homemade food. As ever it's a special kind of welcome and the fellow drinkers always create a good chat.

Woodies, New Malden

A wonderful find. From the outside you might think it's a bit odd - a converted sports pavilion. Inside a very friendly welcome, excellent choice of well kept real ales and very good home cooked food. Next to the training ground for AFC Wimbledon and ideally placed for pre-match food & beer.

The Brewery Tap, Burton-Upon-Trent

Part of the National Brewing Museum and in the dark shadow of Coors. Is this the kind of Brewery Tap that we want to showcase to the world? The White Shield microbrewery next door must be ashamed to take their beers in. Beers were far too cold and the design of the place was a sub-standard version of a chain pub. As one of our party said did nobody have the wit to go for a Sheffield Tap type of design. If you do go to the museum I'd suggest you walk out of the door and head for the Cooper's Tavern in Cross Street - worth the walk.

The Three Horseshoes, Burton Bradstock

Good quality village pub with a range of Palmers ales and decent pub food. Service was efficient and friendly. Worth a visit.

The Brace of Pheasants, Plush

An excellent pub in all regards. Friendly welcome, great beers from the barrel (Doom plus a couple of local ales) and top-notch food (not cheap but worth the money). Hopefully it goes to show that a well-run pub can thrive in today's economic climate.

The Anchor, Seatown

Walked along the coastal path on New Year's Eve to arrive at the Anchor at lunchtime. It was busy then, in the summer it must be overflowing. Palmers beer was good and the food was excellent and quick given that everyone was eating. I liked the basic nature of the pub. Walking boots left on and everyone happy to find a traditional pub.

Dun Cow, Salthouse

Very friendly welcome and excellent interesting food at a reasonable price. The beers were very well kept but it is a pub that's focused on the food offer.

I do understand the earlier comment that there is something odd about the place. The pub looks very traditional from the outside but the large one-room bar feels like a barn conversion whereas I expected a number of bars in a more traditional layout. Very good overall but the layout seems a bit odd.

The King's Arms, Blakeney

It's a old-fashioned pub that does beer (and food) rather than the usual gastro pub now typical of the North Norfolk coast and that's no bad thing in my view. The beers were excellent including the Once Bittern straight from the barrel. Re-previous comments the locals were chatty but it's clear that there's a tourists bar and a locals' bar. I'd say don't go in the locals' bar if you don't want to engage in the friendly banter.

27 Nov 2011 20:17

The Devonshire Arms, Hartington

One of the friendliest welcomes from a landlord in a long time. Well run traditional pub with well kept beers from the Marston's family. Good quality home cooked food. Whether you're calling in for a quick pint after a walk or want a full meal it's worth a visit.

20 Nov 2011 17:43

The King George V, Brompton

Hidden away in a secluded spot but ideal for the Chatham Dockyards, the KGV is a perfect little pub. Well kept beers, often from the nearby Nelson brewery, and a friendly welcome. Very clean and tidy with good pub food but mainly it's the sense of a pub trying to be part of a community that shines through.

The Angel Inn, Larling

I'm not easily pleased but this gem goes in my UK top 10. Unspoilt, excellent choice of beers and good quality food. We had a warm & proper welcome (i.e. not have a nice day nonsense). The owners care about this place and it shows. The adjoining campsite and the pub must make for a cracking weekend. If you are stuck in the usual queues on the A11 or visiting the nearby distillery it's definitely worth a visit.
