The Foundry, Brighton

It's a few years since I've been here. It's got better: better music, friendlier bar staff - a proper pub.
3 real ales which could have been a bit better kept. If they'd been in tip top condition this would have top marks.

The Crown and Anchor, Brighton

We tried this pub as a change from the Park View.
It looks very swish after its refit. Staff were super friendly, with even a bloke in an apron walking around giving table service.
We were there on a Saturday night and, much to our surprise, it turned into a bit of a riotous occasion, with a (good) singer, a large group of mature gay people (supporters of the singer), an equally large group of young straight people who entered into the spirit of the thing and a mix of other locals letting their hair down.
6 real ales on (inc 4 from Long Man microbrewery) which were well kept and a good price.
This is good competition to the Park View and other local hostelries.
They even kept my glasses case that I left there by mistake.
Didn't try the food.
I'll be back.

The Snowdrop, Lewes

With a group of friends, I've been cycling from Brighton to Lewes or Glynde most summer Thursday nights for about 12 years. For many years the Trevor was our destination, but last year we changed to the Snowdrop. It has a fantastic range of well kept ales including Harveys and Dark Star and excellent reasonably priced food. My most recent visit saved my annual Saturday trip to Lewes (the smuggest, most twee town in Christendom) depressing me as much as it normally does. The owners have now taken over the Trevor Arms in Glynde - deep joy.

Park View, Brighton

This is my local. The service has improved a lot, but still can be slow at busy times (Friday evenings, Sunday lunchtimes - when its rammed). The care with the ales has improved a lot over the last 6 months and they are generally well-kept. The manager and one of his staff are very keen to maintain their reputation for serving good ales. I'm therefore surprised at some of the comments here about the staff's attitude. I had a roast there last Sunday with my mum and 4 year old daughter. They both loved theirs and my nut roast was ok - but I don't really like roasts anyway.

Park View, Brighton

I was in lthere last night and had an couple of pints of Bavarian Gold ale. Still not eaten there so cannot comment on that, but its basically a good pub in an area where they are pretty few and far between.

The Grove Hotel, St Davids

I went there last week. It was pretty full of people eating. The beer (Brains) was OK but not inspiring. The Grove used to have more character (and nooks and crannies) before it was done up by Brains. Its now a bit anonymous.

Dorset Arms, Lewes

I agree with the person below who likened this to a hotel. I went with a mate on a wet Friday night. The food was a bit pricey for what it was and my mate's 'creamy' mashed potato was dry and uncreamy and his brocolli was limp, so to speak. Harvey's was good though.

Trevor Arms, Glynde

With regards to E_O's review below, I usually have a ploughperson's here and it is tasty, good value and difficult - but not impossible - to mess up. On a recent trip I had fish pie and it was clearly 'home made' even if it was heated in a microwave (I assume, given its heat). It was also very good. My mate had a roast beef lunch and was raving about it. But he doesn't get out much.

The Ram Inn, Firle

I visited today (a termtime Monday lunchtime) with my wife and daughter because I had heard good things about the Ram after a pretty grim visit 3 or 4 years ago. The place had a definite 'Farrow and Ball' ambience with some braying posh people to match (why do they always have to talk so loud?), but the food was much better quality than before and the beer (Harvey's Best and Old and Dark Star Hophead) reasonably priced. My 3 year old daughter had a very healthy and tasty grilled bit of cod and we both had a ploughman's. I'd say the quality of the cheese ploughpersons was better than the Trevor (albeit let down by flabby white bread) for about the same price. The staff were excellent. Will definitely go again and have something off the main menu.

Trevor Arms, Glynde

The Trev serves the best pint of Harveys I've ever tasted. Its food is not poncey and well priced compared with other country pubs in this area (eg The Cricketers). Sometimes you have to share the pub or garden with yayas going to the Opera.

The Preston Park Tavern, Brighton

As someone says below, this is known locally as The Ladies Pub (although last night the clientele was actually about 40% men). It's really a restaurant which also has a bar attached. Well kept Harveys saves it. Popular with the Boden-wearing female of the species. Food is pricey 'new British' cuisine - lots of 'nestling' and 'drizzling' going on.

Park View, Brighton

This is a good local in an area without a lot of choice. The ale can be too cold sometimes and they need more bar staff at busy times but they do usually have good interesting guest ales on as well as Harveys. The pub has a nice feel to it - apart from when local idiots are in the place (normally Fridays).
