The Green Dragon, Lovedean

Now under new management, Cath, she says it will be open everyday, which will be a change as the previous tenant seemed to operate flexible opening, I never knew if would be open or not

The Bird In Hand, Lovedean

Under new management, reopened at Christmas. Whilst closed there was a burglary with some kitchen & dining area items stolen so no food at present

New owners [2 Marks + a Wayne] already run a few pubs, new manager goes in next week, as does new chef, and she has been with the new team for over a year so obviously knows her stuff

They have also prised a few bob out of Enterprise Inns to fit new windows & general refurb

All in all things are looking up, but only time will tell

Was in yesterday, and to answer W980501, it may just make the New Year, landlady moving out and is asking Enterprise Inns to provide manager or it shuts, again

The Mead End Inn, Denmead

Popped in as I was taking the photos at lunch time, I only had half of Ringwood Old Thumper as I was driving, but how I wished I wasn't, it was excellent

very welcoming and pleasant, with a wide selection of beer & lagers, next time I will try & get someone else to drive

Red Lion, Chalton

Following my last visit and pleasant experience on 21 Dec I returned with others for on Sat 29 at lunchtime

Oh dear, it seeFms HSBplease review in Aug 2007 was correct.

Beer was good, but we waited over 45 minutes for meal, nothing special, it was off the daily menu board so should have been readily available

The veg was seriously overcooked and had obviously been sitting around for ages, cauliflower more like slurry, rest was just tasteless pap

Like HSBplease I was a guest, so kept my thoughts to myself but share them here with you

Conclusion, beer OK, but just have a sarnie or bag of crisps

The Cross Keys, Great Bedwyn

I am pleased to report that I was wrong, ref my previous review in March 2007

Since then, on recommend of a local we have used this pub 5 times in Dec 2007, all at lunch time, and I am please to report that my experience in Feb appears to have been an anomaly

On all the occasions I have visited in Dec, including 27th which was a busy time, the service has been very friendly and welcoming

Nice warm & cosy bar, with fire & pub dog [friendly boxer puppy] it is the classic country pub

We always had lunch, which appears to be home made and cooked, and not from freezer to microwave, and have enjoyed every meal. The portions are generous and reasonably priced

Beers I have tried are Waddingtons 6x & Fullers London Pride, both of which went down a treat. My companions have stuck to coffee, which is freshly made & I am informed is very good

Parking can be a bit chaotic, park wherever you can find a spot, but as it is a small village then this is to be expected and really should not put you off visiting

Red Lion, Chalton

We went there lunchtime today, first time for years

No complaints at all, food fine, bit pricey compared to some locally but not OTT

I had Fullers Winter Ale, never tried it before, and was very pleased with it, so I had another one

Companions had coffee, which was fine

We had 3 young children with us, and the staff were friendly and helpful, and the portions for the children were fine

The place seemed to have a friendly atmosphere and general air of competance about it

Spotted Cow, Cowplain

Popped in late afternoon with a regular who drinks there

It seems a bit cliquey, but as he was one of the clique it was fine

Standard late afternoon pub locals you find in any pub, had a couple of young kids in as well so I guess it is OK for families.

London Pride was tipple of choice, went down fine, barmaid friendly and would I return, good local boozer

The Roebuck, Marlborough

Managed to get in for lunch, it was open this time

The interior is OK, nice & warm on a cold day.

The lunch menu seems pricey for the specials, any way we opted for Ploughmans and prawn sandwich with chips.

Both OK but nothing special to mention about them

I fancied a London Pride, but as I had visits in afternoon thought a lower strength beer would be a better idea, so had a Gales "Butser" as Gales was my local brewery until closed by Fullers. Again it was OK but I'm sure the Pride would have been better

My companion had coffee, which she said was awful

Ample free parking, which is one plus I guess

So, generally it was OK, and if stuck then it would do but if you know somewhere better, like the Wellington in Marlborough then go there

The Three Tuns, Great Bedwyn

Gristy "and it's a bit too obvious that "Shiner" is inextricably linked to your pub as well"

You are seeing what is not there, I have no connection to this pub, or nor other, the only connection I have to beer / pubs is as a user

FWIW I live in the Portsmouth area, and the only reason for being in G Bedwyn was visiting my mother

The Welington Arms, Marlborough

Visiting Marlborough March 2007 I checked the pubs listed as a likely venues for lunch

Unfortunately neither The Sun nor the Green Dragon suited our food requirements, so had to take pot luck in the Wellington Arms

A moment of serendipity, the initial impression was not too favourable, bare board floor, a bit dark and a few regulars having a lunchtime pint

However the food looked good, so we chanced it

There was a good choice of beer available, 3 cask bitters.

Because of afternoon commitments I chose a pint of Flowers keg, [lower %] to drink whilst awaiting our lunch [Fish & chips BTW]

The Flowers was, so so, but then I expected nothing better from it to be honest

The fish & chips was great, and 6.95, but they have a daily reduction of one menu item to 4.95. That days reduction was sausage & mash, and that looked magnificent

After the Flowers I had enough of that, and had a Ramsbury biter, cask pulled. I soon wished I had chosen Ramsbury first time round, very drinkable

To sum up, do not be put off by initial impression, well worth visiting.

The Cross Keys, Great Bedwyn

Visited on a wet Wednesday lunchtime in Feb.

The side door was open so we went in, the landlord? gave us a grunt & went out the back

We sat down, looked at the walls for a bit awaitnig his return, then we went up the road to the Three Tuns

Save some time, go to the Three Tuns in the first palce

The Three Tuns, Great Bedwyn

We visited this pub in Feb, on a wet Wednesday lunch time. We did try the Cross Keys first as it was nearest our parking spot & had slightly better review than Three Tuns.

However even though the Cross keys was open all we got was a grunt & and [presumably] the landlord then vanished & left us in limbo. So we walked up the road to the Three Tuns

This was the best move we ever made. Although the door was locked [it was about 11:45] they opened up when they spotted us.

The welcome was friendly, and although the food was still being added to the blackboard menu we were able to order without fuss

We chose fish & chips, and it was absolutely lovely.

Service & staff were very good & helpful. Would certainly return again
