The Old Nun's Head, Nunhead

"There is another pub across the green called the Man of Kent which does not feature on this site - that one I would steer well clear of as it seems to be home the SE London pikey element."
As an ocasional user of the Man of Kent I strongly object to this description. I have many criticisms of the licensee but the customers are somewhat above "pikey". If you only go to watch football you can expect the violent subspecies that football attracts. Otherwise they are standard working class drinkers in an old fashioned working class pub.
Regarding the Nun's Head, it used to look like a pub but some yearsago went down the gastro route with the trendy minimalist
deco, bad acoustics and high prices like a clone of Lordship Lane.

I have been using this pub occasionally for a few years. The lunch-time food is the best value around and the staff are friendly and pleasant. Nice people. So is Hoagy (Mr. hogan to you), the landlord.

Wednesday 4th Feb. Klinker Club. 8:30pm 5
Hugh Metcalfe and friends perform their unusual mix of experimental music, jazz, poetry and performance art. Excentric, eclectic, challenging with good humuor in probably the best venue in SE London. The Harvey's bitter is pretty good too.

Are you a promoter of live music or any other form of live entertainment? Are you a band with a following and looking for a venue? Our dance hall is free to hire. With good quality sound system and mixing desk we are ideal for bands. There is a proper stage, real fires and the bar is probably the cheapest of any venue around. You may charge entry and keep the proceeds.
Please note correct phone no. 02076356426.
At the moment we are hosting comedy, salsa, line dancing, rock, folk, private parties, weddings, funerals.
Sunday Jan 25: School of Rock showcases some their bands. From 2pm to about 7pm.

Under new (yet again) management since end of August.
It's been cleaned up quite a bit; the gents loo in the front bar doesn't wrinkle your nose at 20 paces. There are toilet seats in the ladies - at last. The hand driers work; the third rate framed hunting prints have gone, replaced by 60's film stars; new plasma TV; and a real fire is planned for the bar (safety regulations permitting). As the new governor I am slightly biased, but we are probably the first to spend real money on this place in over five years. We intend to carry on as a venue pub.

Attended the Westerham Brewery "Meet the Brewers" evening
last night. Great atmosphere, packed out. good selection of excellent beers. Founder of the brewery, Robert Wicks
gave a speech showing his firm's love and devotion to traditional brewing especially their attempts to recreate
some old recipes of the region including sourcing rare yeasts from some historical yeast depository and their use of English hops.A most informative and enjoyable few hours. It's nice to be in that rare thing: a pub where
the loudest noise was intelligent conversation. Congratulations to Ray, the governor.

I have lived a few hundred yards from this pub for several years and was put off by its cliquey-ness until
shortly after my wife died. The friendship I received from the regulars was heartwarming. Its just a basic, no-frills local but with a warm heart. The continuous TV for racing and football(and -YUK- "Deal or No Deal") in the afternoons is grating but unavoidable in any pub round here unless its gone gastro. Very poorly heated in winter.

The Earl Ferrers is closed for the time being( since Jan 2007). Plans are afoot for a new tenant to take over.Rumours are that a good spread of real ale should be on offer.
