The Benjamin Huntsman, Sheffield

Agree with previous reviewer - decent range of beers (quality of some Harviestoun beer we tried really was up there with the best), reasonable food when considering the price and staff better than many other Wetherspoon pubs.

Certainly superior to the Banker's Draft down the road.

The Babington Arms, Derby

Overall a good Wetherspoon pub. Beer was very good indeed (Thornbridge and Teme Valley tried) with enough serving staff and top up without asking. Beer choice was also very varied at about 14, most being small brewery offerings rather than the usual suspects.

Food was the usual Wetherspoon menu - some of it pretty basic but a good price. They were doing fine mid afternoon on a Tuesday in January - a good cross section of customers.

The Bankers Draft, Sheffield

Middling Wetherpoons. Staff were better than many, but 3 different beers were all a bit hazy and bland. Deuchar's that is not crystal clear is a very rare occurrence. Food was the usual Wethespoons standard - cheap but not great.

Old Ship Inn, Sidmouth

A regular haunt when in the area - nothing much seems to change here and that is a strength. Excellent Sharps Doom Bar bitter (when I visited - not sure if permanent) and reasonably priced food which was more than acceptable.

The Volunteer Inn, Lyme Regis

Good Sharps beer on my visit and the cut and thrust of a proper pub. Good natured but a bit loud at times and a slightly surly barmaid (to visitors anyway).

The Nags Head, Lyme Regis

Very friendly service and beer more than acceptable. This is the slightly 'out of the way' pub in Lyme and all the better for that.

The Harbour Inn, Lyme Regis

Very good St Austell Tribute beer - possibly the best beer of a week long stay in Dorset. Beer was a reasonable price for a seaside town, but the food looked expensive for a pub, to a northerner like me anyway! However, I didn't try it and other reviews are favorable.

The Royal Lion Hotel, Lyme Regis

Butcombe beer was top notch and a comfortable place to drink it, although it is of course more a hotel bar than a pub. If you want the cut and thrust of a pub try The Volunteer up the road.

The Pilot Boat Inn, Lyme Regis

A bit short of atmosphere, but Palmers beer was fine and food reasonably priced for a seaside town. A slightly more interesting range of food options than is normal.

Shave Cross Inn, Marshwood Vale

Interesting pub that clearly is well thought of. Helicopter directions are included in their brochure!

The food smelt very appealing indeed but no lighter menu is available at lunch time, except for very overpriced soup at nearly 6. The friendly service didn't mask the poor, murky Branscombe beer either (the worst beer of the week on my Dorset holiday).

The Thorn Tree, Matlock

A recent change of licensee (2007) and still a great pub. Cask beer as good as ever with a choice of about 6 or 7, certainly at the weekend. A litle more food available now, but mainly a friendly local that welcomes all.

The Greyhound Inn, Old Higham Village

Much more a restaurant now. Meals expensive really for mass prepared, although the 'lite bite' options offer better value. Service a bit hit and miss but usually good. Pedigree and one other guest - ensure the staff fill them up to something approaching a pint at these prices.

Duke of Wellington, Matlock

In Feb 2007 beer moving over to the Greene King set, and still somehow drab and tasteless in here. Everything else good - bit smokey, but that will be gone soon.

The Cherrybank Inn, Perth

A very cloudy pint of cask beer blindly offered up here when visited in 2005, but the Landlord quickly on the case and sorted it out to give a first class pint. Other things v good all round.

If you like your beer in Matlock...
Zero passing trade, welcoming with quality beer.

Duke of Wellington, Matlock

Welcoming, but somehow never quite managed to be interesting. Beer usually OK rather than good.

The Globe Hotel, Dukinfield

Smart, but expensive beer - well over 2 for Boddingtons (6/05) is too much.

The Albert, Llandudno

Seemed smart enough and service prompt, but beer (Brains SA) was very poor.

The Kings Head, Llandudno

Very good feeling to the place. Beer quality and service top notch.
