The Grapes, Limehouse

Just remembered I owe this place a slating. Organised a training day with my team so that I could drag them from Waterloo to this pub afterwards, citing it's ambience and proximity to the river. On arrival I looked at the selection of four real ales. I was disappointed that my preferred option was off so elected another. I was told that they had no real ales, but was offered a bottle of Black Sheep from the fridge. I apologised profusely to all. I still enjoy the small balcony out back, and it was a nice day, so no complaint there. One of our group was late so we felt obliged to have another. This time Miss Disinterested told me they had run out of all ales, even bottled! Had a Guinness and left. Ian McKellen; if this is your plaything, please do not ruin it for those who used to enjoy it or live nearby.

Black Dog, Vauxhall

Been to this pub twice now and it's a pretty decent pub. Nice ambience and good, though unspectacular, pint. However, had the misfortune to go in for an after- work pint during one of the World Cup matches, as the pub had an advertising board outside. Imagine my disappointment when they arbitrarily decided to shout last orders at 10.25pm, and had shut up shop by 10.40. The match was still in play (and went to extra time) but I was informed that they were closing early on Mondays due to neighbour noise complaints. Then advertise this rather than give a false expectation! Or just turn the tv down a bit and ask for a bit of customer co-operation Everyone inside was pretty calm). Disappointingly had to try to find an alternative mid-match. Pretty poor customer service I think. A shame because the area cries out for a decent pub.

The Dove Inn, Barnsley

My friend Miles and I are the only Derby fans in here. Remains pretty friendly and the beer is decent. 3 beers on and have tried 2 which are properly decent. Considering it's match night we're pretty comfortable and would recommend to other footie fans. Not a top, top joint but friendly and safe, with decent beer

The Plough, Ashby de la Zouch

This pub really needs a fresh review as the old ones are now largely irrelevant. The friendly, new landlords, Pud and Lee-Ann, have really revitalised the place and have a good selection of 4 real ales on. The pub is tucked away 2-3 minutes off the main street but well worth the walk. Usually comfortably busy with a nice feel to it. Tasty home-cooked food is also available at times. A much-needed decent pub in a town that now, sadly, desperately lacks one.

The Builders Arms, New Barnet

An occasional visitor now, but never disappointed. Landlord James does a great range of beers despite GK tie, and his Abbot is invariably spot on anyway. Had a great night watching an excellent covers band a couple of Saturdays ago. Main gripe (tired upholstery and grim toilets) now removed following a nice revamp of the place. New, minor issue is the strong whiff of kitchens in the front bar since the new Thai menu came in. Definitely not a reason to stay away but a good extractor fan in the kitchen would help. All in all a great local, and well worth the journey I have to make to get there.

Ye Olde Mitre Inne, Barnet

Had a great evening in The Mitre a few weeks ago. Beers were great, and not particularly expensive, atmosphere was pleasant and even the limited, sausage-based menu was ok. However I have to echo the comments below about the cold shoulder received at 11pm onwards, culminating in being herded into the street at twenty past. This put a real damper on the evening. No need for it. Sort this out and you've got a splendid pub.

The Cottage, Cardiff

Had to comment on the previous review. Went to Cardiff as an away football fan and decided to chance this pub. It turned out to have an English manager and was really quite friendly. Beer was decent too, with a good range of Brains and others, all pretty weel served. On my list for our next thrashiong in Wales.

New Ellistown, Coalville

7-8 minutes off the M1 is this proper locals' pub where you can get a really decent pint of Pedigree. B&B is great value for money (good brekkie) and you can do the novelty thing of a haircut and a pint, from ex-barber landlady Lee-Ann in the barber's side room, for about 7or 8 quid.

The Brunswick Inn, Derby

Fantastic pub. Must be the best in England that's en route to a football ground. Great range of beers, especially Landlord, Pedigree and the local Burton Bridge to complement the house's own brews. Decent food on match days. Shame they don't do hot food for varied kickoffs as this place is an oasis to a Derby fan with a 250-mile round trip. Good place to drown your sorrows before jumping on the train too (especially last season!).

The Harp, Covent Garden

About time I contributed to BITE instead of just reading it, so where better to start than the best pub in the West End and probably in London? Binnie runs a proper old pub with a great atmosphere, friendly staff and a good range of well-kept beers. I treat this as my "local", even though I live in Barnet, and inevitably end up there on any visit to Central London.
