The Dartmouth Inn, Totnes

Visited last night, the pub was packed with people eating pre quiz, which had about 50 taking part, plus 20 watching the football. We spent a few hours there, and would happily go again.

On tap were Jail Ale which tasted good, and Otter Ale.

Got enticed by the food, chilli concarne, and the Chip Shop special both good value.

The Albert Inn, Totnes

Had a roast dinner here in July, excellent value, choice of roasts. We ate in the garden. Inside choice of main bar, or back bar with bar billiards, live music on saturday, choice of brewed on site ale at 4.2, 3.8, occasionally stout, the infamous HEMP beer. reasonable prices. This is olde worlde, a real treat of a pub, regular beer festivals

Royal Seven Stars Hotel, Totnes

This is a very big bar/ eatery /hotel /events venue. Comedy every other month. It's hundreds of years old. Great location, can watch the world go by from an excellent vantage point with outside heating and seating. Wide range of ales, ciders, lagers. It is not cheap, but then the supermarket is nearby if you want cheap (and a choice of bus shelters to drink in).

Over the old river bridge is the Albert Inn - very old, quirky, real pub !!

King William IV, Totnes

It's been revamped, lots of money spent, more of an eatery / bar feel than a pub. Still has great stained glass windows, normally 3 ales on draft, has sport on, conveniently located at bottom of main hill up to other pubs - if you need a rest after 100m from Lord Nelson, and 150m from 7 stars.

Worth a try,

The Bull Inn, Totnes

I called in to watch England v Wales in the rugby world cup, has a pool table, more a youth, lager drinking pub, lot of football is watched here. Regular disco, it is not a quiet pub in the evenings (unless its a monday night).

For ale - go elsewhere,
For sport - stay here
For lager - stay here

20 Oct 2015 13:52

Rumour, Totnes

It is a restaurant not a pub, but has a good array of draft and bottled beers, ales and ciders. It is the busiest place to eat in totnes, good pizza.

Not cheap, but then the cheapest place is the brewery with pop up bar on fri and sat night only at 250 - 280per pint

It's dark, and atmospheric

20 Oct 2015 13:48

The Bay Horse Inn, Totnes

I visit regularly with a good atmosphere, large back garden area, typically a choice of 3+ ales, various ciders, folk music regularly, log fire, no played music, this is a proper pub, and very popular with young and old. No TV, snacks mostly.

Recommended if you are visiting totnes, if you want sport - its on at the Bull nearby

Castle Inn, Totnes

This closed in 2015, due to the local rates costs. The pub is now the brewing shop for the next door totnes brewing company, the back garden (all paved is now the garden of the bar next door.)

Totnes Brewing Company, Totnes

This is worth a visit, it has a very wide selection of world ales, and ciders, with a wood spit and sawdust feel inside, or a large quiet back garden which feel looks up to Totnes castle looming overhead.

On the high street, with some great local shops, eateries, pubs,

Bar staff are friendly, this is like a brewery tap, as the brewing vessels, and tanks are directly behind the bar. Prices are 350p to 500p a pint depending on what you would like. As compared to the cheaper but less choice New Lion Brewery 5 minute walk away.

20 Oct 2015 13:41

New Lion Brewery, Totnes

This relatively young brewery is on the main road, short distance from railway station, by the Vets. They have a pop up bar friday and saturday 5-9, with typically a choice of Pandit 4.9% a well hopped pale ale that I prefer, Mane Event 3.8% session ale which tastes pretty good, and Totnes Stout 3.8%.
They have produced other ales including; TQ9 - ale with a hint of earl grey, a chilli beer that was tasty, selection of stouts up to 10%,

Small scale, friendly staff, great atmosphere and convenient location. I 've been visiting for about a year. Often with toddlers in tow which is fine.

20 Oct 2015 13:32

The Tally Ho Inn, Totnes

Re opened march28 2014 after 3 years, now a community pub, which is great as this is a fine old low ceiling atmospheric village pub,

choice of 3 ales Dartmoor Legend, Hunter's Dreamer, and Bays Topsail.

Pub was busy, roast lunches looked and were good.
Puddings were damn good and high calorie,

Definitely worth a visit, and tucked next to a wee quaint church.

The Three Horseshoes, Batcombe

Have visited a few times in 2011, gone gastro but a good feel to the place, three beers on tap, tasty home made style pork pies for sale on bar, dartboard, adn extensive menu for the fine diners.

locals still use it, a good sign

27 Oct 2011 20:09

The Edgar Wallace, Temple

visited on a tuesday, busy, good atmosphere, must have been 8 ales to chose from. not a cheap venue but different, tucked away and worth a visit.

27 Oct 2011 20:06

The Lyceum, Strand

popped in quickly, lights still a touch bright, kitchen out of action for the night but still all booths busy, and good atmosphere. main courses usually 6 quid ish

27 Oct 2011 19:58

The Rising Sun, Kemsing

visited yesterday, certainly its tucked away (taken me 10 years to refind it). real olde world shabby look to it. on a sunday midday 10 people in there, wine, tea, and coffee drinking walkers, cyclists and locals. it does have a smell to it, but its charming - previous points accepted - i did spot some hands that needed washing but at 2.60 for a respectable ale - thats sensible pricing these days.

think mr tribus from the tv show where he was a hoarder who's house needed a good spring clean and you wont be disappointed

its certainly the other end of the gastro village pub worlde

17 Jan 2011 11:48

The Montpelier, Peckham

A choice of draft ales, Wandle, Sambrooks, pretty large and for a wed night, not very busy. Wood flooring, smartish bar sort of feel. they ve had to revamp to compete with the nearby Wishing Well / Victoria (100metres)

The Burger, and whitebait looks reasonable

20 Oct 2010 17:24

De Hems, Soho

tried some dark beer on draft, 4.50 a pint. tasty and strong and a reasonable atmosphere downstairs and upstairs.

20 Oct 2010 17:21

The Horse Pond Inn, Castle Cary

At last a pub thats open having cycled to the castle cary station from shepton mallet and the closest pub the Brook House Inn was shut..

Very large pub, quite a few locals loitering and drinking lager, dart board, large lounge and dining area. Choice of Youngs ales (as a Youngs pub) plus a few thatchers ciders on draft. All quite civilised,

20 Oct 2010 17:18

The Three Horseshoes, Batcombe

Back in for lunch, had a few pints of local ales, molecatcher and revival.
Our party of 8 seemed pretty pleased with the food. choice of 3 ales.
still a decent pub even if it has gone abit swish

20 Oct 2010 17:09

The Applecross Inn, Applecross

Stayed here for 3 nights, friendly staff, only 1 ale on draft, others in bottles,
this location is the back end of the world, incredible scenery.

Food was excellent, the fried brekker, kippers, and porridge were all great, wide menu for dinner and lunch. other chpoice for drinking is the walled garden, 1Km away- had a few bottled ales there one night..

located on edge of a loch, B&B rooms were small but well presented.

only pub for miles and miles,
top location as made famous by BBC's monty staying as a crofter a few miles away..
a shame they didnt have more on draft given how busy the place is, but full range of lagers available.

27 Sep 2010 11:54

The Horseshoe Inn, London Bridge

Visited here with 60 other hashers/joggers who like ale. reasonable service, a selection of London pride and 2 other beers,

pretty big inside, including a back conservatory room, yes there were some people watching the gogglebox but i wouldnt call it a footy pub really

Not bad and tucked down a very quiet side street, easy to miss.

13 Sep 2010 16:07

The Anchor, Henley-On-Thames

Visited Sept6th, sat afternoon, quiet during the day with a pleasant and quiet floral beer garden out back. tried all 4 beers on draft, oxford gold was reasonable, the summer beer was a bit too fruity for my liking, a 3.5% beer by a brewery i'd not heard off was decent and well kept.
Its another brakspars pub - one of 11 in the town - see leaflet for ale trail with free t shirt..yes it does have preserved for tourists written all over it, but its off the beaten track and on a quiet road.

labrador dog in one armchair and a few locals having a banter, the barmaid was 70. i thought the place had a charm that is lacking in most pubs these days. The open windows enable a joint conversation from inside and out which is comical to watch.

Give it a try, you wont find as many absolute tourists as the nearby pub on the river next to the bridge..

13 Sep 2010 16:03

The Three Horseshoes, Batcombe

Visited last friday night, Pub has had a major revamp and looks very smart, bar staff are friendly and attentive,
Had a friendly atmosphere, freshly baked excellent pork pies and chutney available on the bar. Choice of 3 ales, i forget the names at abv 4.1, 4.3, and the local area usual - Butcombe.
About 25 people in for dinner, the food smelled and tasted excellent - not quite gastro pub prices, but the fish and chips looked great at a tenner in beer batter, pork belly was decent, in fact the others reckoned it was the best innovative pub food they'd had in a very long time- and theyre food snobs...
The pudding were also very good, the chocolate cheesecake was a generous portion,
Garden and village are both top notch with some great walks nearby,
Food it definitely scored a 9.

24 Aug 2010 12:09

The Woolpack Inn, Northington

Visited on a cracking hot day in late June, interesting choice of ales, - palmers, and 2 others, eng v germany was o n the box.
have to agree with other comments- it is a gastro restaurant, not a pub,
manager might be an ozzie he's that brusque and maybe slightly deaf. Spare staff were knocking about like it was their second home, on the plus side there were some decent looking young women...

service charge was included, prices are high, environment is very swish, casual drinking trade in the winter - likely to be zero.

Take your mum on mothers day !!

20 Jul 2010 13:44

The Wishing Well, Peckham

Re opened in a new trendy foody pub format, very popular, ales described as good.
The victoria inn - bellenden road. helpful staff, outside suntrap until early evening.

17 Jun 2010 14:27

Bar Story, Peckham

Cool and trendy but with a stupid impolite owner/bar manager who will throw you out if you dare raise a mumur of complaint, or dont enjoy waiting whilst cocktails are made up. Bottled ales only, happy hour on cocktails but get your order in early - if your still waiting for service - bad luck- you ve lost out
Try the nearby Victoria on Bellenden road - reopened June this year, or the Montpellier

17 Jun 2010 14:25

The York, Islington

In here yesterday, choice of tim taylor, plus others, busy with the footy on, and seating out front in the evening sunshine, plus people watching which is a great game in this dolled up females part of london. food orders stop at 9.25 sharp

17 Jun 2010 14:20

The Liberty Bounds, Tower Hill

17 Jun 2010 14:02

The Cheshire Cheese, Tower Hill

bitter from 1.99 thats a bargain in the south east.
toilets were fine, not sure what the fuss has been about, lots of blokes in watching arentina v south korea

more refined upstairs

17 Jun 2010 13:56

The Crutched Friar, Tower Hill

visited today, 4 ales on draft from 2.75, to tim taylor at 3.15. lots of internal space and seating for dining, a little dark inside,
sports tv's, food looked respectable, its a nicholsons. outdoor garden at the back. not as cheap or downmarket as the nearby cheshire cheese which was bitter from 1.99. staff seemed friendly and efficient, manager is an irish female.

17 Jun 2010 13:54

The Blue Eyed Maid, Borough

dropped in on a monday, tuesday is karoke night. choice of a few ales, narrow long bar suitable for staning, seating out the ack, or outside inthe alleyway

11 Jun 2010 15:54

The Hand and Shears, Barbican

dropped in with 50 other joggers, nice atmosphere, front and back bar, plenty of quiet standing space outside.

11 Jun 2010 15:52

The Alma Tavern, Wandsworth Town

good atmosphere, food looked decent but over priced. a pint of cider and lager came to 8. so they re making some profits, local choice is royal standard 50 yards away or up the hill, theres another large well heeled pub/ gastro dining bar.

11 Jun 2010 15:51

The Duke of Wellington, Aldgate

droped in on a wednesday night, very quiet, choice of 3 ales, the green king at 2.50 - lowest price i ve seen for ages. lots of space for standing, tucked 100 metres from spitalfields. vincent the manager is a chiry east ender, bar staff are female non brits. decor is shabby.

11 Jun 2010 15:47

The George Inn, Croscombe

dropped in for a few ales, friendly locals, fire roaring and the odd dog with walkers, good choice again of brews

14 May 2010 13:24

The Railway Inn, Sandford

dropped in after a few tasters at thatchers 100m away, fine range of ales and ciders, food looked good and well priced for ham egg and chips, has the feel of a carpeted living room. pub garden was nice

14 May 2010 13:21

The George Hotel, Wedmore

Popped in for a few ales and ciders on our cycle tour, very respectable, food smelled good. beer garden, clean and smart inside, polished wood floor, very bar (not pub) like in the back area,

14 May 2010 13:02

The Trotter Inn, Crickham

Dropped in last week on a cycle tour of local cider makers & farms. Very laidback, remote, friendly manager and staff, pool table and music still very good, cider out of a bottle from supermkt is a disapointment. Worth a visit for its tranquility, camping possible, lovely people,
Needs a clean and thats part of its charm, definitely not in business for the money, still serving butcombe, crisps only when we were there, dog friendly.

14 May 2010 12:52

Swan Inn, Arborfield

Stopped in for a few pints after zorbing-sphereing down a hill inside a large inflatable nearby, friendly locals, food was respectable. landlord dave insitu, regulars from dubai and locally. good choice

14 May 2010 12:39
