The Hobgoblin, Oxford

This is a strange one. Sometimes it can be really good and at other times not. I guess it depends when you go and who else decides to go as well. There's usually a lot of students that go and it does have a bit of an indie feel to it (possibly due to the music they play perhaps) They sometimes have bands playing which can be a bit annoying if you are enjoying a conversation. In many ways this place is the younger brother of the Zodiac although it does do proper beer. This is probably the best thing about this pub that they are constantly changing the beers they serve. Just don't go there for Sunday lunch. The last time I did I had to wait about 2 hours for it to arrive and when it did it was seriously below par

Cheap and nasty. No proper beer served here, I brew better stuff myself at home

The Duke, Oxford

This is a good pub to go to if you are on a night out on cowley road. It has quite a contemporary design inside and at weekends they sometimes have a dj. Intriguing but friendly bar staff await you along with 1 and a half pint sized glasses and a long list of shooters.

The Lamb and Flag, Oxford

This is a great pub, quite small but bigger than you may initially think. It took me several visits before I realised that there is a little area tucked away behind the fireplace. I was so pleased to see that they serve Betty Stoggs due to the fact that i am a big skinners fan after a visit to cornwall several years ago. They also usually serve spitfire as well.

Britannia Inn, Headington

This is a good place to go if you are in search of food. Their 2 meals plus drink for 9.99 until 6pm is a great deal. The range of beers is quite variable though, sometimes they have lots of guest ales but sometimes you can be limited to just marstons pedigree. Not a place where i'd usually spend a lot of time, it just doesn't really feel like a pub and there isn't really a lot of atmosphere. In the summer though it's quite nice to sit out in the beer garden

The Butchers Arms, Headington

In my opinion this is now the best pub in Oxford. One review talks of a change of landlord in 2006, this landlord left in October 2006 (i think) along with his dog and there is now a new Irish landlord who is fantastic. He has turned the place around. It's still a Fuller's pub and they serve pride, chiswick, discovery along with special one offs that change every couple of months. The food is now much better than before. The sunday lunch is great, you get a lot on your plate, although the deserts could be improved. They also do good steaks. Friday nights can be very busy but there is a great atmosphere. There is also a quiz night on sundays around 8pm which are always a laugh. On 1st March they introduced a smoking ban in the pub so the air is now nice and clean in there.
