The White Horse, Chilham

Three of us wandered in here by chance on a Sunday afternoon. Had some very nice beer (Harvey's Susses, and something very pleasant called Vicar's Ruin).

However, what warrants the score is the food. We all had roast rib-eye beef. And I wish my stomach was bigger so I could have it twice. Easily the best pub roast I've ever had - a big slab of melt-in-the-mouth tasty beef, a huge crispy home-made Yorkshire, crispy roast spuds, roast carrot, and freshly cooked cabbage - all with a nice tasty home-made gravy (definitely not Bisto!). The ingredients are apparently local and organic, well to be honest I'm not that bothered about that, but if that's part of the food was so good then I'll be going greener in future.

Will be going there again - easily worth the 40 mins drive. Actually, I may take the train and so I can do a proper beer test...

The Chambers, Folkestone

A basement bar. A great place for a lively evening - and it even sells real beer! Frequent live music, and occasional quizzes and even film showings. Good atmos, youngish crowd - but more the t-shirt and ale type rather than trendy club-gear and lager - OK that's a hopeless over generalisation, but I hope you get the drift. Coffee bar upsatis good too.

Bar Vasa, Folkestone

A wine bar. Music can be too loud for talking, but otherwise a good and popular place for a lager or glass of wine. USP is its location - across the road from the beach - parking can be a problem when weather is good.

The Ship Inn, Sandgate

'A nice pub for nice people' with 'proper beer in a proper pub' as the Landlord says. Mix of locals and passing trade, unobtrusive music and no fruit machines. A freehouse with always an interesting range of ales (usually 3-6), lagers (3-4 including proper Budweiser), and Kentish cider. Stuart is a character (been working there too long possibly) and has a good eye for recruiting barmaids. A fun quiz (none of your semi-professional teams and leagues here) on Tuesdays. Interesting decor...

Gate 28, Sandgate

Popular in the evening as a wine bar, and at lunchtimes as a coffee bar with the local Saga staff (who're a bit younger than their clients...). Good if you want that - if you want a pub then look elsewhere.
