The Three Blackbirds, Flamstead

Achtung, Spitfire! That was my humorous compliment to the landlord for the high quality of his Shepherd Neame Spitfire ale. It is still a character historic pub, that is also a highly living and sociable pub too. The beer garden and open space outside is much more usable than a few years ago. Three real ales in all, from regional brewers. Well worth a visit.

Rose and Crown, Tewin

As a Saturday, and weekend cycling visitor to the pub, I can say: I think that the service is most diligent and friendly, and the cask ale is kept quite well. The pub is a very historic one (C17, with many original beams, and with chequered-brick outside)with very tasteful modern extensions, and also there are good gardens. Before you enter Tewin on most of it's roads, there is a sign asking you to "Please drive carefully." I think that a silhouette of Lewis Hamilton's McLaren rcing car, underneath the message, would be highly appropriate for Tewin. Unfortueately, some drivers would just shove their foot through the floor!

The Brocket Arms, Ayot St. Lawrence

There is so very much of historical and cultural interest in the village, and not just because of G.B. Shaw and the
simply wonderful living, and historic pub that the village has. The five or more cask ales are always in superb condition, and the pub is a great destination for the walker and travelling tourist in many practical and social ways (meals, accommodation, enlightening conversation, etc.)

Three Horseshoes, Willian

Again I am mistaken: there is just wide-screen TV in the bar, and not SKY.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

Just had a superb bitter from RCH: full of hops and flavour, bubbles lining the glass all the way down

The Red Lion, Preston

The Red Lion is paradise for the real ale afficionado. There are five real ales always in utterly superb condition: well looked after by Tim, who is also jokes corner. The setting of the pub and garden are gorgeous on a summer's evening. The meals are good value. Hitler would never be near a pub like this - in hell probably.

The Sunrunner, Hitchin

The pub is very homely and popular, since Kev took over. It has many real characters, like Tim whose dog panders customers and pinches hats and gloves. I like the company very much. The beers are well kept, about average as yet. There's always an ever changing range of bitters, with mild stout and porter from time to time - which is very good. There's connosseur wine and german beer on keg too. We hope the Wednesday night live music will be back during this year
