The Maid of Muswell, Muswell Hill

Good food and good new decor - small and very busy tho, so get there early if you want a nice evening with a seat.

The John Baird, Muswell Hill

Has gone up in price a bit, but still a good pub - great for watching football and nicely unpretentious. Good atmosphere and good beer.

Ha Ha Bar and Canteen, Muswell Hill

Friendly service and friendly crowd, good for chilling out and usually plenty of good looking girls and boys around. Yes, it's a chain pub/bar and yes it's pricey, but it's a nice enough place to spend an afternoon or evening.

O'Neills, Muswell Hill

An O'Neills pub in a converted church - does pretty much sound like the worst venue ever. But actually this place is pretty good - and easily the best O'Neills I've been in anywhere in the country (yes, yes, I know the competition isn't that high). It is, as everyone says, great for football. But also always a decent crowd in, service is quick and friendly, atmosphere good. In fact, all good enough to make you forget you're in an O'Neills (phew).

The Artillery Arms, Old Street

Lively pub after work and good for spilling onto the streets from. But the service is very unfriendly and often slow. Beer pretty good though and no major complaints.

Three Compasses, Hornsey

Have been going to the Three Compasses regularly over the last year or so - it's a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon, or an evening, for a quick drink or a long night, just one of those very adaptable places.

The staff are all very friendly; the sofas are really comfortable; it's deceptively large; big screen is well placed for sport; the quiz night is good; the selection of ales (and wines, I'm told) is excellent; food is great; prices are all standard for London - but cheaper than poncey chain bars. And you get individuality and character thrown in too.

Right, I'm going to stop there because this is starting to sound like an advert. And I don't want *everyone* turning up and crowding the place out... But I do really love this pub.

If I had any complaints, would be that the food service is usually pretty slow (so don't expect to be in and out quickly if you're eating) and while the menu is interesting - so great the first few times you eat there - it's not that extensive for variety on regular visits.
