I completely agree with Boesky. I go there and love the building, the location, the layout of the bar but the place is so tatty, the staff too few, the decor so poor, the service slow. It would have no one in it were it not such a great space in such a great location. People would flock there if only it felt fresh and happy rather than nicotine hell and grumpy

honestly. some people. certainly the pub has changed from a place that had walls made entirely out of nicotine to a place where you can now see the bar. But I consider that an improvement. The range of beers (particularly the bottled bitters) are very good and the menu is strong. Those who like their pubs mute and grumpy should stay away whereas those who like good beer, good food and nice staff should head over.

This is a great pub and my local. It used to be a terrible grey smokestained pub full of old men sipping their halves of mild. Now the wonderful thing is that it is full of great food, lovely staff with happy yet relaxed atmosphere but even the old regulars still are happy to come in. A democratic pub where all are welcome.
It doesn't have the most adventurous bitters but the quality is always excellent and you are guaranteed a great night, afternoon or day.

I heard about this place from a friend and came down from London specially. It was well worth the trip. It is one of those places that you can walk into and really feel like you are a local by the bottom of your first pint. It had a great atmosphere and has obviously been subject to a recent and tasteful refurbishment. Food was very good, with plenty of choice, avoided the cliches of pub (and gastropub) food and instead went for simple and really well cooked dishes that were full of flavour. It is really well worth travelling for

The Castlenau, Barnes
can anyone explain why no one has ever managed to make a go of this pub?
