The Kings Arms, Trowbridge

Please reset the ratings for this pub. It was re-opened in Aug 2010 and is now run by Mike Lefever who owns the freehold. There are very decent beers and ciders, changing regularly. The staff are friendly and the atmosphere is good. Well worth a visit if you fancy a pint in Trowbridge.

The Prince Of Wales, Dilton Marsh

I had a decent pint of "Proper Job" here tonight. The pub was busy, with a Skittles match in progress. According to "Pints West" the CAMRA branch was in attendance. I'll pop in again and see if the quality is maintained.

Yes: the food is not what it used to be. A shame... The beer is OK if you fancy a pint.

The Raven, Bath

If your first impressions are of a cramped/busy bar then please try upstairs which has a different atmosphere.
I popped in after work on a Tuesday and (surprisingly) had a rather watery pint. Thankfully the barmaid (landlady?) overheard my remark to a colleague (at an impressive distance from us, too) and immediately changed it for a perfectly decent Raven's Gold.
This is the first time I've had a dodgy pint in this pub, and I was pleased by the service. It's not often you get a drink changed (for free) without even making a complaint. To be fair, she showed concern at the time of pouring and did ask if the beer was OK. I reckon it had just been changed.

George at Nunney, Frome

A word of warning: no children under 14 are allowed. The landlord (formerly of the Cross Keys, Corsley) seems to be anti-children, or anti-bad parenting of misbehaved children.
A blanket ban seems a little harsh. We went to the much more welcoming Talbot at Mells instead.

Have to agree - excellent food.
Tonight they had Naughty Ferret and Crockerton Classic from the Wessex Brewery. Great stuff.

The Waggon and Horses Inn, Beacon

A decent enough place to stop off for a pint. Child-friendly. Landlord welcoming. Walled beer garden was pleasant. Inside was airy and clean, with a few nooks for privacy. Toilets very clean.

We tried both of their beers (6X and Butcombe) and they were well looked after.

The food was OK but overpriced. (E.g. I had fish pie. It didn't taste of much really and wasn't worth 10.)

The Cross Guns, Avoncliff

"Outside" food was awful. (You'd probably find it acceptable if you eat at McDonalds.) Staff surly and unhelpful. Beer garden in great location, but full of chavs with dogs. And an angry swan. Beer OK but not very well kept. The Old Peculier was watery and lacking in flavour.

The Bell, Standerwick

We took the kids here for dinner on a weekday, and the staff were genuinely friendly. Beer good, but pricey. Food was good. Definitely worth a visit.

The Cross Keys Inn, Corsley

An update: my wife went here for lunch. She had a very nice steak baguette and the beer was good too. She said that the staff were snooty.

The Kicking Donkey, Brokerswood

This is one of the best pubs in the area.
The beer is always well kept and the manager is very enthusiastic about it. The staff and locals are friendly. Food is good. Children are welcome and there is a large garden opposite with play equipment. I've been here dozens of times and I've never been disappointed.

I can confirm that children (under 12) are not allowed into the pub. They won't even have a baby in the beer garden. Apparently this pub is in the Good Beer Guide 2007, but they won't be getting my custom.
