The Six Bells, Farnham

Now taken over and completely overhauled. Being marketed as a 'foodies pub'. It looks a lot better and is receiving good reviews for the food. They do need to market themselves to the local community so the locals understand that change has taken place. Encouraging!

Queens Head, Farnham

Hugely improved pub being run by people who know how to create an atmosphere, keep beer and produce good food! I like the music posters all the walls and the fact that it's being run as a pub not a restaurant!

The Hop Blossom, Farnham

This is a consistently reliable pub in Farnham. Dog friendly, real fires and a proper pub.

I love it but I must admit it's quite expensive drinking. Then again it's Fullers and that brewery seems to have forgotten that economic times are hard! They pressurise landlords to push up prices and don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. It's not much cheaper at the Queens Head on The Borough which is another Fullers boozer. Still one on the best pubs in town.

The Albion, Farnham

I went into the pub last night (Sunday 6th Nov). It was quiet but the lady behind the bar was very friendly and the beer was good. They had 4 ales on (including a mild!). It's a good venue. The people who ran it a year or two back spent a small fortune on refurbing the place and then tried to move it upmarket on the food front. It was OK but you need to have some serious wonga to keep the early momentum up. I hope the current management get some support as they seem to be doing the right thing! I'll be going back...

The Princess Royal, Runfold

Nice enough road house. Beer was very good. It's no more expensive than anywhere else round here and at least it's very well kept! Well worth a visit.

The Seven Stars, Farnham

Rumoured to about to be taken over by property developers. I think you can guess the fate that will then befall this nice building! One less pub in the area....hmmmmmm...

The Albion, Farnham

Now reopened. I know no more than that!

The Lamb, Farnham

Great little pub in Farnham. Tucked away down a side road. I've drunk in 'The Lamb' since 1983 (when it looked very different and you had to buy the landlords dog a pint to avoid getting bitten in the scroat!) and have never had a duff beer in here! Well worth finding.

The Mexico Inn, Penzance

The name is pretty historical name from mining days rather than a modern theme pub as such. There used to be a fairly manky parrot near the bar but the ales were always good. An interesting establishment for its history and the fact that it's set in to the middle of a terrace.

Wheat Sheaf Public House, Farnham

One of the most underrated pubs in Farnham. The landlord also had the bottle to tell it like it is dealing with the pubco's on the local BBC radio station a few months ago which was very refreshing listening! I like this pub. Good atmosphere and decent interesting selection of beers. Great pub to chill and have a flick through the paper!

The Albion, Farnham

A group of youngsters got persuaded in the usual GK con to spend a shedload of money on doing this place up but didn't really then have the experience to deliver the goods! Do GK ever actually spend any of their own money on the pubs they own unless absolutely forced to?

Been in a couple of times in recent weeks to find just one ale on on the first visit and then none at all on the second. It's a shame because this place has possibilities but it just drags along the usual declining slope...

The Bat and Ball, Boundstone

Hmmm..the pub is OK but has a few major problems. 1. If you book all the tables you are no longer a pub, you are a restaurant. Passing trade will become just that...passing onto the Sandrock 2. The duty manager (not the landord who is fine!) there can be extremely rude. He managed to hit one of the customers with the kitchen door when the poor chap was trying to sit down when I was there and then berated him for 'standing in the wrong place'!!. One of those types who think the customers are an incovenience! 3) The beer is usually OK but they are very conservative with their choices.

It's depressing to read comments from obvious 'child haters' elsewhere. Only in the UK would you read that sort of stuff. What a depressing attitude...

The William Cobbett, Farnham

I love this place. Like a time warp. Good selection of beer and a great jukebox! I like getting stuck to the floor!

The Six Bells, Farnham

The problem with the Six Bells is a lack of continuity. When they have a decent manager/landlord the place picks up and people DO use it. The problem is, they move on, an indifferent manager takes over and all the good work goes to waste. The Greene King tie doesn't help. Those fools just strangle whoever comes in. The beer was alright on my recent visit but the whole place could do with a spruce up! The smoking ban hit this pub hard. If it was a Free House and someone with an inkling of intelligence took it over it would flourish!

The White House, Guildford

I held a social here for some colleagues yesterday. The landlord and staff couldn't have been more helpful. They booked out the upper area and we had access to the balcony area as well.

The beer was in excellent shape. I had the ESB and Seafarers and both were faultless. We had the chilli-nachos, mezze and pizza and all were very good indeed. Obviously home made pizza and chilli and all very well presented. Everyone was impressed and we'll use the pub again for future socials! Recommended!

The pub was also clean and used glasses and plates were getting picked up quickly. It all makes a difference! Keep it up people.

The Halfway House, Pitney

Quite excellent establishment. Everything a pub should be. Great ale, wine and food. The food is also superb. The fantastic ploughmans should be shown to every other landlord in the country who serve up plastic cheese, two bits of lettuce and not enough bread!!

I can't recommend this place enough....actually I can..go away.....I don't want it to become over run.....Cheers!!

The Seven Stars, Farnham

Trouble is not 'usual' in the vast majority of Farnham pubs. Losing the St George's flags that adorn the pub (always a handy warning of white van man haunts) might help it look a little less intimidating.

Yes, if you want to go and watch sports then the 'Stars' is an option. It's still a pretty sterile place with little character. It's better then it was but that is not that difficult.

The Bat and Ball, Boundstone

Very nice pub. Good example of how to refurb a pub properly. Areas for families and areas for adults only. Great beer choice and quality and exceptional food. The access road how now (largely) been sorted out.

Only minor gripe is the policy of sometimes reserving all the tables in the bar area as well as those in the restaurant area. It would be useful to put a note on them saying what time they are reserved from so the entire internal family area isn't effectively taken out of use for the whole time from opening until the diners turn up!

The Sandrock, Boundstone

God-like pub. Best in area by a long chalk. Will go here for my 40th birthday in September (and many times beforehand!!)as beer quality is always excellent! Food is also superb. Everything a pub should be and so many never get near to achieving!!

If you haven't been, go. If you run a pub go and learn how to do it better. If I could spend my life here and the Halfway House in Pitney (Somerset) I would die a happy man!!

The Albion, Farnham

Alright on recent visit. Fairly quiet. Beer was good. Three real ales on priced at 2.60 and 2.40 a pint. An oasis of a half-decent outlet in East Farnham now Six Bells has gone downhill.

10 Apr 2006 14:03

Borelli's Cafe Bar and Restaurant, Farnham

No real ale. I was charged 3.00 for a pint of lager on a recent visit. Usual array of good looking girls behind the bar, clientele consists of suits, a lot of groups of women (many older and perma-tanned nouveau riche) and scrubbed up builders on the pull.

Food is good but expensive. In the 80's this bar would have been full of the jazz-funk crowd. I think you get the picture.

The Six Bells, Farnham

Things are going downhill sadly. Leasehold is up for sale and beer quality has been awful recently. Total tragedy. It can run as a successful business. It just needs a decent landlord and some hard work.

The Nelson, Farnham

The food is great. Unfortunately this is not really a pub any longer which is a shame as it was an excellent establishment. Well and truly 'gastroed'.

The 'small' bar space at the right hand side of the pub is cramped and has inappropriate furniture. They do have some real ale but it's not a place you'd go just to drink most of the time. The rest of the 'pub' has way too many tables in which makes it very cramped and suggests someone cares more about getting as many people in as possible over diners comfort.

10 Apr 2006 13:53

The Marlborough Head, Farnham

A bit more lively than the recent past but seems to be attracting some..ermm..interesting clientele. Very smokey. Beer was restricted but was fairly decent. Bit chavvy.

Queens Head, Farnham

Decent pub that has suffered some..ermm..not very good landlords in the recent past. Beer quality has improved greatly in recent months and it's a nice place to visit again.

Tragedy that Gales have sold their soul to Fullers. They at least should respect the basic integrity of the pub and not knock it around. Shame the beers will no doubt change!

Running Stream, Farnham

Great little quiet pub. Like something left over from the sixties. Beer is well kept and the staff friendly. If you want to get away for a chat, read the paper and have a quiet pint this is the place! Recommended.

The Six Bells, Farnham

Keith and Louise ran this place superbly. Beer and food was great and the place was rammed. Regular beer festivals were also held which were a great success. They eventually left citing lack of support from those above (ahem!) and the place has just reverted to be OK. Food is not very good in my opinion and the beer choice is fairly limited once again.

A real shame as it was all going so well!

8 Mar 2006 18:01

The Seven Stars, Farnham

used to be a great traditional town centre pub. Run down by successive bad landlords and owners. Eventually hit by the inevitable 'refurbishment'. Just resulted in attracting undesirables and barely legals..if you know what I mean?!

They have, to their credit, tried to sort out the problem but there is little atmosphere or incentive to go to the place. An all too common story of how to knacker a decent boozer.

8 Mar 2006 17:58

The Shepherd and Flock, Farnham

Very good real ale pub. Also had an exceptional German chef who sadly recently left. Haven't tried the new chef's output so will shelve further judegement until tasted.

The beer is the star though. An exceptional, ever changing range of ales and bottled beers. One of the best ale pubs in the area. The refit's not bad. The old place was a little...er...dirty and very smokey! Seems to be exceptionally popular.

8 Mar 2006 17:53

The Lamb, Farnham

Very good town centre local. Live music on Friday nights on a regular basis. Lots of locals use this place on a regular basis which aids the good atmosphere. Beer quality is always very good. Can get a bit smokey though obviously not for much longer!

8 Mar 2006 17:49

The Hop Blossom, Farnham

Very good Fullers pub. Never seems to have cracked the food issue though. Beer is well kept and a good atmosphere. Recommended.
