Yew Tree Inn, Mosley Common Worsley

This pub is now closed, tinned, barricaded in behind concrete and falling into disrepair... Sad.

The Red Lion, Worsley

This pub is closed, and is now a house...

Moon Under Water, Wigan

Saturday afternoon and a Wetherspoons that is nowhere near busy. Therein begins the knowledge that something is wrong with this pub. Tables uncleaned and empty glasses stacked in odd corners. Strange. Ordered an Erdinger, a rioja and a couple of packets of crisps. Was told would have to have a glass for my beer (why wouldn't I for a wheat beer) but then, as the lad poured a pint of head into the plastic beaker losing some of my beer, I said not to worry as I'd sort it - but was told no, he could not let me have the bottle so I had to wait while he tried to sort it. Then, he tried to charge me £12 for 2 drinks and 2 bags if crisps. I commented that this seemed a little steep, something he clearly hadn't noticed. After checking his till he advised that he had charged me for an extra drink, a pint of Stella!!

As I said, the untidy nature of the day resulted in us selecting a table which had been bathed in ale, but the previous visitors had used 2 menus as place-mats... We found a member of staff to clean the table, only to hear other tables shout over that they too were in need of a clean. Poor lass was suddenly v busy!!

Beer and wine out of plastic is hard work. Vessels never look or feel clean and my pint glass had an edge that felt like it had been chewed.

All I can say is that there have obviously been problems either in the pub specifically or the town in general and the way they have decided to deal with it is to make sure anyone who wants a quiet and pleasant, civilised drink will go somewhere else, so they can just deal with numpties. Will. Not. Go. Back.

The Queens Hotel, Newbury

A lovely friendly pub with attentive bar staff and a very eclectic clientele. And the beer and the food are SO cheap. This is a gem of a place to stop and rest your feet. Not the most modern to be sure, but worth a visit in this no personality world of chain pubs. Wish it was my local.

Richard John Blackler, Liverpool

There are a few JDW in Liverpool centre and this is the least intimidating. Unfortunately it continues to serve people well past the point where they are too drunk, doesn't even carry enough of the bottled and canned drinks it advertises and has woefully inadequate bar staff. Food ok tho. Truly Wetherspoons are becoming the McDonald's of the pub world. Family spending and cheap alcoholics catered for.

The Swan, East Looe

Quiet in June. Some rough looking clientele and an odd smell. Not a good choice...

The Trafford Tavern, Trafford Centre

Now closed and replaced by a theme burger bar

Moon Under Water, Wigan

Poor drinking experience. The bar us a long affair set in what amounts to a corridor with half a dozen gambling machines to your back. The staff are very young, very slow and not above loudly bemoaning their lot while taking your money. Really not worth a visit.

The Cavern, Liverpool

Friendly staff and nice music do not make up for the shortfalls on this pub. The patrons were rude and aggressive and the whole place smelt like a urinal. The stairs to and from are lethally steep and the bar prices are stupid. Include it on your sightseeing tour by all means. But I wouldn't stay long.

The Coach and Horses, Harvington

Off the beaten track and all the better for it. Fantastic food at a good price in a nice atmosphere. Bar staff could not be friendlier. Well worth a visit and far nicer than many pubs in the area that make a real effort to attract the tourist. Well done.

The Vineyard Inn, Abbots Salford

Visited on a weekday evening in summer. Tiny bar with very slow service. Little in the way of atmosphere and although expansive outside area was full, no-one seemed to be coming to the bar to order drinks! Take away fish and chips available which is a novelty. Lovely location and probably better of a weekend.

Old Swane Inn, Evesham

Small for a Whetherspoons but with a large outside 'beer garden' to the rear. Friendly staff and cheap but OK food. Good mix of drinks in nice part of town, but a below average hostelry.

The Gipsy Moth, Greenwich

One of the best nights out I've ever had. Fantastic mix of people. Lovely space. Good food. Just how you would want a pub at the 'fun' end of the scale to be. Great.

The City Arms, Manchester

Lovely little hole with just two rooms and nice friendly atmosphere. Great location for the middle of everything! Nice beers and nice food.

The Waterhouse, Manchester

Not your typical 'Spoon. Small rooms. Nice fireplaces. Art on the walls. Bar *is* too small but it has a good mix of folk in there and is a nice place for a pint.

Ye Olde Fleece Inn, Kendal

Nice food and friendly staff. TV unfortunately but friendly atmosphere. Don't go in the evening tho when it reinvents itself as a *bar* with DJ's and v loud music.
