The Canton Arms, South Lambeth

I'll be honest, the 'refurb' really didn't blow me away (not much more than a lick of paint), and it still has a slightly 'chilly' atmosphere (during the day). The food was indeed great, the service was certainly friendly and there was a little more vibe on the opening Friday night.

I'll keep going back for now.

Vauxhall Griffin, Vauxhall

My favourite pub in Vauxhall by miles. Friendly, awesome service, genuine atmosphere completely absent from either the (newly reopened) Canton, the Fentiman or the Wheatsheaf. Unsurpassed jukebox.

Not tried the quiz... but I will!

Due to reopen 18th Feb 2010 apparently. Will be under new management.

The Latchmere, Battersea

3 of us came here for food and drinks on Saturday. Despite waiting at a virtually empty bar we went unacknowledged for 5 or 6 minutes by the bar-staff who didn't smile, or speak to us except to tell us the price (please/thank you anyone?). We asked to order food around 3pm; there was some initial confusion as to what food, if any, was being served (although the signage advertises food served 12-9pm on the weekend). Their 'signature' burger was unavailable, so a meat meze platter was ordered. When said platter arrived (food plonked on the table, not so much as a word) it appeared to be a piece of chicken in a bun, so was sent back, and we asked to cancel the platter order. It turned up anyway, and was several slices of the most rancid cured sausage (greasy white sheen on every piece) I have ever seen, seemingly hacked off with something as blunt as a pair of safety scissors, and not only that, but one slice was covered in black, furry mould.

We returned it to the bar, got no apology, then decided to leave, but had to clear up our tab, I was refused a request to speak to the manager (busy in the kitchen apparently - cultivating listeria I presume), and told I had to pay for food that we had already eaten, I refused, we paid for our drinks and left.

To cap it all off the place was full of people who thought that occupying the thoroughfare from the pub to the toilets with their sports bags and toddlers was a considerate way to behave.

Avoid at all costs

The Fentiman Arms, Kennington

I like this pub, its so much better for being seconds from my place. Food is really good (although I have never brought myself to try the 3.50 green beans - at that price they must be beans of joy!) and it's a nice place to chill out at the weekends.

Regarding the comments about the staff, they are always friendly; its there is just a strange air that life would be easier for them if there weren't any customers and they have a massive aversion to people taking up tables who aren't eating. I think they are just victims of their own success and under pressure to cater for all the people who visit to eat. If you are in a big party expect to wait for your dinner. Worth the visit though!

The Duke of Edinburgh, Brixton

Went here last night, no Thursday night quiz and despite 2 pool tables, and 2 open fires there were only about 4 people in there.

Nice pub, tonnes of seating, just completely empty.
