The Cricketers, Croydon

I have to respond to Dave Marks' post, as it is totally inaccurate, on so many levels! Firstly, there is no beer that costs 4, I think Fosters is 3.50 and Carling is 3.40. There is karaoke on a Sunday, which is shared on alternate weeks by two different hosts (I'm one of them) and as I know Dave Marks, I can categorically say that he has never even been in the pub on my nights. As for Paul 'prancing around half naked' ... he hasn't been in the pub since last September when he ceased to be the chef in the pub, so to post something up months after it was even possible for it to have happened, is not only unreasonable, but misleading to the general public, and to describe the pub as 'his local' is another anomaly, as he's never in there!

lol @ Cheeky...you ARE cheeky!!

Stacey comes down every week and loves it, so it can't be that bad!! It's not bad at all in fact, and we do have a lot of fun, there's always dancing and laughter all round the place!

The night you came, the landlord got annoyed cos that thing got pulled down from the door, albeit done accidentally or not..just one of those things!

Yates's, Hounslow

*sigh*

I don't usually comment on the pubs I work in until I have been there for a while, so that I can give a balanced and unbiased viewpoint, but seeing as my name has been mentioned so many times, I guess I'll have to alter my thinking on that in this instance.

Anyone reading this will have to remember I can only comment for the nights I work there, as I don't live in Hounslow, so it's not a place I frequent on a regular basis. On saying that, from the couple of times I have been in there, I think it's a lovely pub. Nice and airy, lots of room to move about in, reasonably priced drinks, and next year's smoking ban has already been thought about, by heated canopies being put outside to accommodate the smokers.

I certainly would pop into Yates if I lived in the area.

Now, onto the comments that have already been made. Firstly let me make this very clear. I value my karaoke crowd above and beyond any pub that I work in, they are the reason that I work in Hounslow and choose to drive for an hour and half during rush hour to get to Yates, and arrive home shortly after 2am. It's a long night, but one that I am happy to do, not only for the people that currently 'follow me around', but also in the hopes that I make new friends, and lots of money for the pub!

Just because I love the people that come to my gigs (many are more than just singers to me, they have become good friends too) does not mean I will always agree with everything they say, and they know that if I have something to say, I will say it.

Cheeky is certainly entitled to his opinions, as are we all, but I think I should address some of the points he raised.

Plastic glasses...he clearly said he accepted the reasons why they had to be used, just that his preference was for real glass. Late licensing laws have to blamed for that, nothing to do with Yates at all.

Lighting. I'm not really sure where to go with this one. The rotating lights weren't put on until late into the evening, so it wasn't a case of having to put up with them all night. Perhaps the lighting sequence can be looked at, so that it's not such a consistant beam every thirty seconds.

The fracas. Yes there was one, but I saw nothing of the scuffle myself, only bouncers finding out where it was, and containing it before it was brought into the main hall. I have also been reliably informed that it was the first scuffle in six months.

Clientele. I actually didn't find them to be any different to any other pub I go into. A mixture of ages, some more reserved than others, but I certainly didn't feel under any pressure or felt threatened in any way...a couple of times I thought my TV might get knocked, but that's because they were having a good time dancing, and one of the doormen came over whenever it looked like it might get bumped into, just to keep an eye. Normal, boisterous late night crowd.

Toilets. I cannot speak for the men's as I didn't go in there, but the ladies' was rather nice, and two big rolls of loo paper on the back shelf of the cubicle were provided.

Pole Dancing. This is where I have to lean towards Cheeky's viewpoint. It wasn't exactly the high point of the evening, in fact more people left while it was on than any other time, en masse! I think the men thought it was going to be more of salacious affair. Unfortunately, by the time the girls (and guys!) have had enough to drink to get up the courage to do it, they've also had too much to drink, to do it properly!

Umm..his other points, well, I can't really say much there can I? I thank you for them Cheeky, but don't go OTT...you might leave some people feeling rather disappointed when they actually see me!

All in all, I'm rather excited to be at this new pub, and hope that those of you out there that are reading all these comments, choose to come in and make your own minds up.

Yates's, Hounslow

Blimey! How did I get dragged into all of that!?

By the way, I am now available for karaoke on Thursday nights, if Yates haven't found anyone else yet :)

The Grapes, Sutton

I no longer do karaoke here.

New management wanted to cut my pay, and I'm worth every penny I earn, if I do say so myself!

Good luck to the new outfit that have taken over from me.

Mandyoke! LOL! You do make me grin, Cheeky!

Yes, tis true, I shall be there on a trial basis from..ooo let me see...TONIGHT!!

Seeing as it's 4am, I suppose I should go and get some beauty sleep for it (I know I need it before anyone else jumps in *rasp*)

Ooops! Typing too quickly! I meant boogie longer on Fridays and Saturdays!

Shannons, Hounslow

Hi Daddy :)

I'm sure the karaoke isn't the only thing they like about Shannons, as you rightly point out, it was the quietest of the weekend nights, but also the shortest, so I guess people like to boogie longer on Saturdays and Sundays! Don't blame them at all.

Much love to Cheekyshepherd for coming to my defense though...and THAT is the reason I stayed in Hounslow. Not because I particularly like ( or really know) the area, but because of the love and friendship I have been given by so many over the years.

Some people take the money and run, but I prefer to be somewhere that I enjoy the company of the people (the money is always nice! LOL)

I've already been offered jobs closer to home, but I've accepted one for less money in Hounslow again, just so I don't lose the friends I have made.

I agree with your last comment as well, RIP Karaoke @ Shannons, I wouldn't have met such great people without you!

Oh, and while I'm on here, next karaoke is 19th November! ;)

The Hare and Hounds, Sunbury on Thames

Sorry, I don't know Anonymous of 9th November. The last karaoke that was there was run by a lady called Julie.

I haven't heard of Matt Black, but I'll ask some of my other karaoke host friends if they have and let you know on here if I find out!

The Hare and Hounds, Sunbury on Thames

I'm the person that runs the monthly karaoke at this pub now. The one that's 'great compared to the last lot'...LOL! Thanks for the compliment Anonymous..I think! hehehe

Anyway, onto the pub. When I first learned I was going to play here, I was a bit worried, because I had heard terrible things about it from other people.'Spit and sawdust' 'horrid punters' etc springs to mind.

So, when I made my first appearance, I was most pleasantly surprised to see that none of it was true. It had been true apparently, but since the new management had taken over, things had improved drastically, as other comments below confirm.

The garden is massive! It's a shame that winter is approaching, because it wont get the use it deserves for a few more months now.

Nice comfortable settees and padded chairs throughout the pub, and a pool table in the back area so that men can play with their balls in public ;)

The clientele on every night I have been there have been very welcoming, and I haven't seen a hint of trouble once.

Next karaoke is on October 22nd 2005 ( Get a plug in while I can!) and I'm also there on New Year's Eve

Shannons, Hounslow

It annoys me a bit when I see someone posting generic comments.

When I posted, I said that I couldn't comment about other nights, I was only there on a Sunday, but other posters just blanketly say it's the pits.

There are no wasters/scoundrels/drink spikers/hooligans etc etc on a SUNDAY night, it's a bloody good night with a mixed aged group, who are all there to enjoy a sing song and a laugh!

Don't knock it til you've tried it!

By the way, Gorgeous84, thanks for your comment!

The Waddon Hotel, Croydon

A great 'local' where outsiders are always welcome.

I've been doing the karaoke there for over 5 years now, and we have a laugh everytime.

Energetic crowds at weekends, quite peaceful during the day, except when there's sport on, then you have all the atmosphere you ever wanted!

Booze is mega cheap!

The Abbot, Redhill

To everyone that has commented about how much they hate it:

It has just been taken over again by new management, and I'll guarantee that Jo will get out any undesirables. It has just been redecorated, very bright and nice, and although they are still charging at weekends, there is no mid-week charge now.

I shall be taking over the karaoke from this Thursday coming (3rd June), and I wont tolerate any bad behaviour either, so give it another chance and see what you think!

I can't change the price of the drinks though :(

The Grapes, Sutton

First off, I think Steve must be thinking of another pub called The Grapes!

The pub itself is very tidy, the bar always polished, the floors always clean. It is very long, and has TVs and speakers throughout its length for maximum benefit to those that are going in to watch sports events. 3 pool tables in bright surroundings make this a very ambient place to be, and the drinks prices are very reasonable too.

I run the karaoke in there on a Tuesday night, and we have a good old time from 9pm til midnight..when everyone is pleasantly seen out by the doormen. The great thing about Sutton, is that there are plenty of other venues to then go on to.

I have been running karaoke there for nearly a year, and never once on my nights have I seen any trouble, either inside or outside the pub. The doormen are very approachable...not like some of these types that would like to bash you if you looked at them the wrong way!

The pub itself is also perfect for a mid afternoon drink, as if you have walked from the top of the high street to the bottom, it's there waiting for you like an oasis!

Shannons, Hounslow

Hello! I am the person that runs the karaoke on a Sunday night at Shannons. I have been there for 18 months now, and the changes I have seen over that time are quite dramatic. The decor, furnishings and flooring have all been vastly improved, giving a much nicer feel to the place than it had when I first started there. Not only that, but the clientele ( well, at least on my night! ) has rocketed from me having a handful of people in until 10.30... when all the turf outs from the other pubs would come in....to having loads of peeps in from when I start at 8.30.

We really get a family feel to the place on a Sunday night (sorry I can't speak for the other nights, but I'm not there to see them!)...and we have a lot of fun too!

I would say, if you last came to Shnnons a year ago, and wasn't very impressed, please go down again and see it now, you may well be pleasantly surprised :)
