The Defector's Weld, Shepherds Bush

I liked it on previous occasions but regretted meeting a friend there before a gig at the Empire. The doorman tried to tell me I wasn't on the guestlist (!!!?) I tried to explain that I was meeting someone in there and that what he said was ridiculous, eventually he did let me in and I did meet my friend but it seems doorstaff/management got the wrong attitude towards people who just want to meet for a pint before a gig (can't have been the first time people tried to give them money for that...it's pretty close to a major London music venue!)

The Evening Star, Brighton

ahhhh... the evening star. we can't seem to get on the train out of brighton without at least one visit :-) one of my favourite pubs, even though it can get smokey in there as it's so small

The Old Bull and Bush, North Hampstead

It's now reopened and it's completely smokefree inside, which is always a good thing in my book. the big side room on the left is now the restaurant, where you can have good wood fired pizzas, sausage and mash, steaks etc. not particularly cheap but what we had was good and not overprized IMO. Good service, and a nice selection of beers, including a fine Bavarian white beer. The new decor is quite swish and upmarket, black and white leather sofas, etc... but it's definitely comfortable. A good place to go on a Sunday afternoon after a walk on the heath!

The North Star, Ealing

following on from my comment in November - I've just seen that the middle room is now a non smoking area - though it's not completely separated from the other rooms, this is still good news. I shall rate it higher now!

The North Star, Ealing

i would rate it higher and go there a lot more if it would cater for non-smokers. it's got about three rooms, why can't they have a non smoking section somewhere? i agree it's got a better atmosphere than most pubs around the area, but it's *very smokey* IMO, which makes me leave after one pint usually. It's okay in the summer tho' cause there's a good outside space.
