Ace place!

The Cross Keys, St Albans

Lots of ale pumps, but last night 2 of the alleged beers weren't "on yet", according to the barstaff. i found this disappointing - do they deliberately lure people in with the promise of certain, then force us to drink inferior stuff?

Oh blimey, hertsboy's back! Still making personal comments about the barstaff - bang out of order, if you ask me. Hb, your judgement about pubs is usually OK, so why spoil things with 'ad hominem' attacks?

Fabulous, dahling!!!! Another "Sex on the beach", and go easy on the tonic. And don't forget to forget to put one of those little parasols in my glass. Life just gets better and better!

The Garibaldi, St Albans

What on earth do Fullers think they are playing at here? Once a fine pub, the Gari has been shut for the last 5 days without a word of explanation. Over the past month it has often run out of beer, and is in an increasingly shocking state of repair. Either Fullers should get a grip or sell the pub on to someone with the talent and ambition to do the job properly.

Should really be called the Gayribaldi: I'm sure a lot of the blokes in here are repressed homos. Worse, it's getting grubbier and grubbier: bits of rubbish on the floor sometimes stay there for days. What a shame. Despite everything the beer is still good, but for how long?

Harry Smiths, St Albans

Ideal for a Friends Reunited get-together: it's populated by lots of pot-bellied middle-aged folk pretending to be young. (But the beer guts give the game away, and the men look even worse, hee hee!)
On the brighter side, this place is well-run and the service is very prompt and amiable. But the whole experience is rather cheap and cheerful. There are better drinking and eating joints nearby.

Have people's prayers been answered? This pub is under new ownership and currently being renovated.

I struggle like crazy to criticise this pub and every time I fail. All of the comments below are spot on. It really is that good. Fantastic. XXX

The Boot, St Albans

What I like about this pub is that its whole philosophy is "live and let live". You can sit at the window and watch the girls go by, or the boys go by, and no one gives a toss. Meanwhile the music is great and you can just be yourself here. Very rare, very special, love it!

The Peahen, St Albans

Had a good meal with wine in here the other week, but there was a bit of "hard selling" by the barstaff which I could have done without: "Anything else? Coffee? More wine? Another dessert? More coffee?" etc etc etc. Oh well. This is one of the posher places in St Albans, and an amusing contrast to the dreaded Vintry over the road.

The Portland Arms, St Albans

Fantastic pub. The Fullers ales are immaculately kept, and the food menu is slowly being expanded. Efficient and friendly barstaff too. The Portland seems to be a bit out of the way but is actually only half a mile from the city centre. Worth a visit. Last time I was here, I was definitely newt-like by the end. Great stuff. Stonkingly good.

Very good beer in this pub and a laugh a minute too! Excellent.
