The Victoria Inn, Borth

best pub in town. well known by generations of A-Level Biology students on trips there. There was a piano last time I was in there, but that was a few years back.

The Gin House, St Andrews

'kin dreadful place. AVOID AVOID AVOID. tasteless modern interior ie cheap and nasty. NO ALE, only fizzy chemo-pops and crap lager. Popular with locals ie not students any more, and airmen from the nearby RAF Leuchars. These two groups enjoy fighting each other outside this cesspit every weekend. Do not go near, at any time, but especially not at weekends as this is a notorious local crime spot, muggings assualt etc.

Laffertys, St Andrews

This pub was restored recently to remove the feinian tat that scarred this establishment. It is now the criterion again is all the better for it. At least two real ales always on offer. recomended for being a more relaxed atmosphere than the booze crazed dens of iniquity that some of the larger town centre bars have become.

The Drouthy Neebors, St Andrews

This pub was redeveloped over the summer and its character has been completley destroyed. the other posts here all seem to make reference to before this unhappy occurance. Here's a heads up,
-The pub has been gutted
-old interior replaced by ubiqutous chrome/glass Westport-esque 'trendy' (allegedly) look

I actually met the designer of the new look and and told him how he could stick his new order up whence it came.

Aikmans / The Cellar Bar, St Andrews

Good for the belgian beers but bad for cask ales. pipes for the cask beers seem not to be cleaned leading to unpleasant aftertaste. Range not so great, restricted to thick sweet Scotch type beers from th likes of orkney. A very popular town centre pub split between two levels. upstairs is an open european style cafe bar with a good selection of cake and other cooked food available. downstairs a very dingy basement bar, which is not as smokey as was thanks to the ban but still can be unpleasant at peak times. Attracts a very leftfield clientele, live ethno-jock music only for the fan thereof in the week. Music on the speakers seems always to be just that bit too loud for relaxed conversation. would recomend a visit early doors before it gets too packed.

The Earl Grey Inn, Leek

unbelievable place. My great Aunt Ethel used to sit in her taking her snuff back in the 1930's and I have been informed that it has changed little since then. I would agree that the selection of ale is not amasing but then what the hell do you expect from a pub that is no bigger than the front room of a terraced house! "needs a lick of paint"? People who talk about this place in these terms clearly fail to see the point, perhaps they should stick to 'sum lager at weverspoons' with all the other muppets. This is the shanri La of back street locals. Well worth a visit.

Den Engel, Leek

This bar moved to its current premises a few years back. The old building was better than the current goldfish bowl windows in the front room. However, this doesn't detract from the fact that this an excellent Belgium-cum-real ale bar. Freindly atmsphere and staff. not as smoky as other places in leek ie Elmo's. Good cobbled coutyard at the back makes a very pleasant spot to relax on a summers evening.

The Wilkes Head, Leek

one of the best pubs that I know of. why?
1- Always a good selection of ale at least two Hartington (Whim, and one other guest. Guests are NOT from a chain list ie not spitfire-adnams-fullers rpt.

2- Interior. Somewhat spartan but this is all the better than false 'ye olde inn' type tat all over the walls. virtually untouched 18th century coaching inn booths etc.

3- Clientele. The landlord is a freindly Halifacian. Attracts few shandy or chemical pop lovers or moronic Sky TV football fans and all the better for it. Dogs allowed, because it doesn't serve food. Good. no sunday luncher types.

The Cock Inn, Leek

This pub was once a good town centre pub but has acquired a bad reputation for lager swilling loutish clientele. I would recomend you stay well away unless you are 'local' and a Stoke fan. If in Leek go elsewhere for a freindly pint.
