The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

excellent free house with a wide choice of real ales. nice mix of people and the salt beef sarnies are a winner also.

The Farriers Arms, St Albans

the farriers is a great little building , very unspoilt with outside loos. it has a loyal following of locals who are middle aged slighly wallyish blokes who are VERY interested in sport and not much else.. Indeed if you are looking for anything further than in terms of conversation i would give it a miss. The beer is functional and the staff are weird.

The Cow, Westbourne Green

previous posts slag of the clientele here and whilst that is understandable at least this place feels like a real honest pub. the beer is on the whole kept well , the food most of the time is reliable and sometimes quite superb. i nearly always come away feeling satisfied and often quite over served.

Paradise By Way Of Kensal Green, Kensal Green

the paradise is now full of posh wealthy city workers who are trying to pass off as "media types" by way of dressing in trendy gear. somehow they don't quite get it right and to the trained eye are clearly imposters. as for the pub itself if you like average over priced food and drink served by rude wannabies who think they are cool cause they work there then be my guest. personally i would rather go elesewhere.

Blue Anchor, St Albans

this place makes me laugh. the food here is cooked slightly above average but the portions are ridiculously small. it's not even as if they are serving up michelin star style rich food (yuk) so it dosen't fill you up. i heard a customer behind me complaining of this and the waitress said to him "this is fine dining". so not only have they got it very wrong with the portions and ridiculously outdated presentation (i mean glass plates etc for heavens sake!) they are also patrionising their customers on the assumption they are all inexperienced in dining out. considering many of us who live in st albans eat out regularly in london's best resturants /pubs this seems very naive. The wine list is also very poor with a distinct absence of the key french producers one would expect at this price range.

i notice the black lion across the road is now being turned in to a rather pretentious looking wine bar / gastro pub with an over the top menu. are these people not realising that what people really want is good home cooked style food with the freshest local ingredients at reasonable price. my advise to the patrons of these places is go and buy a "time out" eating guide for london and educate yourselves by visiting london's best gastro pubs. you might learn something and make some money in the long run!!!
