The Star Inn, Rochdale

Recent refub is tasteful, with some fascinating pictures of old Rochdale. Bizarre that one of the two Gents toilets only has one stand up urinal in it .
New licencees have settled in and are welcoming. As with all Sam Smiths pubs, the prices are the best going - 1.55 for a pint of hand pumped Old Brewery Bitter, which has been well kept on the recent occasions I've been in.
Worth a visit.

The Railway Hotel, Greenfield

Had a great Sunday afternoon there. Superb pints of Tiger Rut, excellent sandwich, live band, friendly mixed clientele and good bar staff. comments about slightly worn decor (which add to the character of the pub) are irrelevant when all the best things about a pub are in place. We'll be returning there as soon as possible. Decent public transport links on the doorstep are a bonus too.

Church Inn, Rochdale

Pleasant local near Rochdale football ground. J.W. Lees bitter on handpump, reasonably kept. Went in of a teatime - locals round the bar who were friendly and having amusing banter between each other. Some nice original woodwork inside. Hosts 2 Crown Green Bowls teams, the area surrounding the green making a good Summertime outdoor drinking venue.

The Ship and Castle, Congresbury

Nice beer garden, plush soft furnishings, scented tealights, and that's where the good stuff ends.

3 customers in when I entered, none when I left. Seems dedicated to posing and little more. 3.40 for a pint of fizzy Stowford Press cider when the next pub up sells a beautiful draught Thatchers cider for 1.30 less is an indication of why the latter pub was much busier!

And for all the fancy flourishes, the Gents toilet was skanky.

The Crown Inn, Churchill

Wonderful wonderful pub. One that is really worth the effort of going to. Hidden away up Skinners Lane, this building is a step back in time. The food , though not sampled, was well received by customers. The excellent range of real ales is served direct from the barrel by a landlord who knows and cares for his beer. Locals friendly and helpful. Can't wait 'til I'm in the region again to go back.
