The Duke of Wellington, Minehead

Well what can one say, this pub has the smelliest toilets I have ever had the misfortune to visit. When I pointed out the awful smell to the barman/manager all he said was "Yeah I know"
People sitting eating at tables near the door to the toilets either had no sense of smell or they were used to smells like this.
The beer was not in very good condition, although the barman did remove the sparkler at my request. A definite NO from me. If this was the only pub in Minehead I would be TT. Try the Britannia at Alcombe, 100% better.

Britannia In, Minehead

What a cracking little pub. Friendly staff and management, and well kept beers. The barman remembered my choice on each visit, even down to my preference of a nonic glass. Well worth the short walk from the Caravan Club site and avoiding the Minehead town pubs that are a bit of a disaster as far as I am concerned, probably down to the clientele rather than management.
Lovely walled garden when the sun shone, didn't try the food, although I did see others tucking in. Will definitely visit again when in the area.

The Roebuck Inn, Wickham

I walked through the woods from the Caravan Club site looking forward to a pint. I have previously walked to Wickham Square via the old railway line, which takes about 45 mins. This walk was on a hot day and only took 25 mins. There was no real ale, the only drink resembling a beer was a gassed tiddly tap London Pride. NO THANK YOU, so I settled for a pint of Strongbow. I was charged 3.95, yes 3.95 for this mediocre cider. Needless to say I only had the one and left.
My impression was an untidy place in need of a good spring clean with greedy ownership. I paid only 3.10 for a superior cider (Thatchers Gold) in a country pub in Somerset a few days before.
I will walk the extra distance to the Square on my next visit to the area.

The Fountain Head, Branscombe

I've been using this pub for a number of years now whenever I'm in the area, which unfortunately isn't very often now. What a gem of a place, Perfect location, great beers, good food, friendly locals. I cannot praise this place enough. I wish I could afford to but one of those lovely thatched cottages within spitting distance.

The George, Charmouth

Nothing changed, greedy landlord, hope he goes bust.

The Kings Head, Wickham

Visited this pub three times whilst staying at the Caravan cClub site Rookesbury Farm. The walk through the woods and onto the old railway line was muddy and took about 50 mins. When I saw that the Kings Head was a Fullers house I thought, London Pride, HSB and Seafarers, all of which I do not like particularly, especially the Seafarers.
The Wild River was just in and I asked for a taste, WOW!!! what a beer, Fullers have a winner here. I am normally a Dark Star American Pale Ale drinker. This Wild River is a cross between APA and the Six Hop ale.
Upon my return home I went to my local Fullers house but alas no Wild River.
Getting back the Kings Head, nice pub, pleasant staff but a bit expensive the W River was 3.80 a pint but I still went back for more.

The Royal Oak, Bere Regis

Visited late on a Friday afternoon following an unfortunate visit to the Drax up the road. The only bar open was the converted skittle alley. One other customer, the bloke behind the jump was very friendly. Had a pint of London Pride, raised by electric pump in the guise of a hand pull. Must say though that the beer was in good condition, although this would not have been my choice if a pale ale had been available. Outside courtyard very clean and tidy. A short but overall pleasant visit.

The Drax Arms, Bere Regis

Visited mid-afternoon on a Friday. The first thing the girl behind the bar said was, "I hope you don't want any food because were closing in a minute" I asked if it was too late to get a drink and she replied that it was okay if we were quick.

Can't remember the name of the ale but it tasted although the pint I was served had been rested in the pipes for few hours. Will not visit again. Went to the Royal Oak down the road. Completely different.

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

Definitely improving. I find the beers are kept to a wonderful standard, if there are any rare problems, such as the last one out of the tub, the staff will replace without a blink of an eye.
The music, well I am normally out of there before it starts, I am a bit too old for the volume, and value my hearing. The Sunday afternoon music can be a lot better if you sit in the smoking area outback, about the right volume for me.
The Dark Star beers are the attraction for me, thank goodness there is a brewer who knows what hops are for!!

The Gardeners Arms, Sompting

Visited with my wife for a Sunday roast. Can you believe seven vegetables!! obviously fresh and not from the freezer. We both had pork, yes with crackling, it was cooked to perfection.
What value at 6.95 each......we had no room for a sweet even though the offers were very tempting.
A thoroughly pleasant visit with friendly staff and landlord, who greeted just about everybody who arrived, whether he knew them as a regular or not. We will definitely return.

The Waterside Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Not a pub, no real ale. The only thing I could drink was a Crabbies Ginger Beer, which was exorbitantly expensive. Will definitely give it a miss.

The Royal Oak, Charmouth

Visited very recently, having been to The George the week before (see comments) The beer was in good condition and the landlord happy to talk about what a bad summer it has been for him.
I had a rump steak with pepper sauce and trimmings, the wife gammon and trimmings. The food was great, just like home cooked, which I suppose you could say it was. My wife couldn't eat all of her gammon, I had the left over for lunch the following day.
Although perhaps not the atmosphere of the George, thank goodness, I engaged a local in conversation, very friendly. I will re-visit this pub when next in the area. Don't give up landlord, as a well known lying politician once said 'things can only get better' which they will if you carry on serving food like this.

The Exeter Inn, Ashburton

What a miserable old woman behind the jump. When I pointed out that a 4.5% cannot be classed as an IPA she virtually dismissed me as an idiot. That I may be but I do know my beers. She even thought Greene King (sorry for swearing) were a good organisation. Will not go in there again.

The Bay Horse Inn, Ashburton

Nice pub, good condition beers, friendly local clientele, Watch the steep steps down from the garden/smoking area

The George, Charmouth

Real ale much too cold. I had to ask for the glass to be warmed before drawing the pint. The Tribute had a chill haze which magically vanished when the glass was warmed.
I ordered a sirloin steak with chips, peas and garnish. The meal itself was ok but served on a cold plate. The pepper sauce was also placed in a cold small jug so this too was almost cold before it reached my table.

The landlord and his partner were also cold. I get the impression that they are a 'We know you have some money in your pocket and we want it. We don't care if you come back, just give us the money and go!' My next visit to Charmouth will be the Royal Oak and definitely not The George.

The Red Shoot Inn, Linwood

Spent four nights at the adjoining camp site, used the pub every night and ate every night. The beer was in good condition and the food excellent. I tried to work my way though the menu, but that was impossible in four evening visits. The 'Specials Board' was the one for me, the 'Trio of Meat' being my favourite with good portions and excellent presentation. The staff were friendly, but not enough staff during the day until 6.00pm. The good autumn weather produced more customers than expected so the poor lady was worked very hard. I will be back!!

The Star Inn, St Just

A sign in the window says 'bring your own food, pasties pies etc but NO FISH AND CHIPS' The landlord has obvioulsy had a problem with those that have dared to bring fish and chips into the premises. I took a pastie from the nearby bakery and when I asked for a knife and fork I was greeted with 'That's what the crimp is for' he did however provide me with a knife and fork and I ate in the rear yard in the sunshine.
The Proper Job ale was in very good condition, the day I visited it was runner up at the GBBF Earls Court, well deserved.
I wouldn't say that the staff were friendly but an interesting pub nevertheless. I think I prefer the Trewellard Arms up the road.

The Queens Arms, St Just

Try the fish & chips and mushy peas, the batter is made on the premises and is much better than most chip shops I have used in the past. The garden is very well kept and a beautiful spot to lunch after a walk on the coast path to see the mines.

Trewellard Arms Hotel, Penzance

I visited this pub for a Sunday lunch with my wife, sister-in-law and her husband during a brief visit to Cornwall; what a marvellous meal, nine vegetables and the meat (pork and beef) were of generous portions. The staff were very friendly and the offer or more roast potatoes was taken.

I did frequent this pub during my six days in Cornwall and each evening I found the owner serving behind the bar very obliging and the real ales (five hand pumps) in excellent condition. I noticed that he genuinely welcomed everyone who entered the premises.

A bit out in the wilds of this county but well worth a visit.

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

Nice to see this pub now doing really well. It was the Dark Star Brewery that initially got me there; the pub had a bit of a bad image in the past before Dark Star took over.

Roy the 'Inn Keeper' as he likes to be called is a nice chap and I can see this pub taking over as the best in Shoreham (and we sure do have a choice!) before very long.

Being a smoker it is nice to hear that there are plans to cater for us lepers by upgrading the outside rear area with a covered area and heaters.

Keep it up Roy, good beer nice atmosphere and I'll continue to pay very regular visits.
