The Wentworth Arms, Mile End

Good old fashioned London pub with friendly staff but, and this is a huge but for me, no real ale of any description. Wide choice of lager, draught and bottles so, given the wide choice of bottled ale in supermarkets would it not be possible to stock a small selection?

The Rose and Thistle, Reading

Beware - Greene King IPA comes out of the froth machine - terrible - tasted like gassed up vinegar. Ordered food - 20 minutes to serve a microwave jacket potato and three day old salad. Have eaten here before and it has been OK. For good real ale use Nags Head in Russell Street.

The Royal Stag, Datchet

I have used this pub on and off during my twenty-five years of living in the village. It has changed hands many times and is now owned by the hapless Windsor Pub Company. All other pubs in the village have closed down and so the management has little incentive to try hard and it doesn't. Expensive, slow service and drab food. This village really needs a proper pub !

The Thirsty Bear, London

I find it hard to understand how a pub owned and operated by a pub company can be so terrible. I called in after work for a pint and a meal. First off, of the three real ales, only one - Bombardier was "on". It was served at sub zero temperature so cold as to be undrinkable. I ordered my food and after ten minutes the barman came to my table to tell me they had run out of the ingredients for my order. A smell of low quality disinfectant from the toilets pervaded the whole pub.

Very disappointing - avoid. Shame because in it's previous life it was a decent pub.

Nags Head, Reading

This pub has become very popular and offers a refreshing change to many modern pubs in Reading. A wide selection of well kept real ales. Service could be improved and staff are not particularly friendly.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Winkfield

This is a top pub and if there were more like this then there would be more pubs staying open. A welcoming and attentive landlord, great staff, excellent beers - Arkell on pump and a comprehensive food menu - both bar food and restaurant.

Please note the landlady can be a little snippy particularly after a drink !

The Manor Hotel, Datchet

This is a desperately poor expensive hotel/bar. Unsurprisingly it is generally empty other than for wedding receptions. I can only assume it is part of a money laundering operation.

The Jolly Coopers, Hampton

I used to use this pub a few years back and always found it pleasant with a landlord who took a keen interest in good beer and good service. I returned this week and had a pretty poor experience. Asked for menus to be told curtly "you can expect a very long wait for food". Strange given the pub only had a handful of customers. We decided to just have a drink - average pint of Courage Best and a glass of white wine that was not cold enough. The worst thing though was that there was an infestation of flies and mosquitos - I was bitten several times. No sign of previous landlord - perhaps he has moved on. Shame. Won't be going back.

The Morning Star, Datchet

This pub has now closed to the relief of many in the village.
