The Bank Bar, Dundee

The Bank Bar is a particular favourite of mine. Centrally located in Dundee's Union Street, it is very near the railway station. "The Bank" is something of a real ale oasis in a city where real ale pubs are relatively few and far between. Several ales by local Tayside breweries are usually available along with the usual favourite lagers, bottled beers and spirits.

Home cooked food is available throughout the day with many traditional favourites being available. Vegetarian options are always available.

Weekends see live music in the evenings, where the focus is very much on local bands.

The Bank, in my opinion, is always worth visiting. Susan, Paul and staff will give you a warm welcome.

The Maltings, York

As a frequent visitor to York, I used to make a point of visiting this pub. It used to have the best selection of ales in York and friendly staff. No longer! The owner looks at his customers as if they were a pain and the staff are'nt much better.

The days are long gone when a publican could treat his customers with contempt and this is evident by dwindling clientele of this establishment.

The Minster Inn, York

Not really! The place certainly left a bad taste my mouth.

Red Lion, Battle

Went to this lovely, friendly, pub with some local friends. it is 17th century and well cared for. The range of beers was good with a varied food menu. A dish which was over cooked was quicky replaced with another, better one. A hidden gem. Recommended!

The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings

When I visit from my home in Scotland, I have found that this is my favourite pub in Hastings. Why? It has good beer, food and a warm welcome from the owner ( when he's there! ) The lady who does the excellent food is nice too. I have been visiting this pub for 20 years and suggest you do the same

The Queen Adelaide, Hastings

The Queen Adelaide is currently being refurbished. It badly needed it! Had a geat pint here some years ago with 2 young members of staff who were very knowledgable about local pub history. Here's hoping the old queen returns to her former glory.

The Dock Inn, Penzance

I must have picked a bad night to visit The Dock. I can't say I find the attitude of the barmaid very friendly. The Spingo was decidedly off and the mumbling, fat oaf propped up against the bar seemed to take exception to me and my half pint of Spingo! Icertainly did not enjoy my visit and wonder if it's under new management in view of this pubs high rating.

Tremenheere, Penzance

Hi

the Tremenheere has all the benefits and faults of a typical JD's. It has cheap food and beer on one hand and loads of hardened drinkers on the other. Language can be colourful and the polce seem to visit the place regularly! However, as is often the case, the staff at this pub were superb, friendly and efficient.

it's sad to see JDs declining from being a trend setter amongst pub chains to being an asset that is being driven into the ground.

Central, St Andrews

Hello

this used to be a favourite pub of mine in St Andrews. I was, however, disappointed during a recent visit when I was served a decidedly off pint of old Peculier. The bar maid insisted that it was just on. When I asked her to taste it, she insisted it was ok. I asked for the manager, who told her to offer me another beer. I picked Lia Fail, which was in good form. The bar maid then tried to tell me again that the old Pec was ok. To which I replied that I had been drinking that ale for over 25 years and I knew when it was off. She was quiet after that and probably relegated me to her list of annoying old farts!

Lets hope your visit is more enjoyable than mine.

The Bell Rock Tavern, Tayport

Hi

this pub is far and away the best in Tayport and well deserves it's high rating. The staff are welcoming, the seats are comfortable and the beers good too. What more does one want for a traditional local?

A great place for beer in the evening or anytime.

Aikmans / The Cellar Bar, St Andrews

Hello everyone,

This pub is now shut. There was a pile of envelopes that could bee senn behind the glass door. It amazed me that this place was allowed to stay open for so long - it was filthy!

The sad thing is that if it had kept clean and spruced up, it would have remained the atmospheric 60's style student pub it once was. Another victim of bad management and the recesssion?

Another one bites the dust!

The Peruvian Arms, Penzance

During my recent stay in Penzance I made a point of searching out this small, neighbourhood pub. I liked what I found. It's a real friendly neighbourhood pub. I even liked the dog! Staff served good beer and chatted with me about my train journey from the north of Scotland. The locals were friendly too and their conversations were often colourful! Viva Peru!

The Crown Inn, Penzance

This was my favourite pub during an all-too-short stay in Penzance. Why?Because, the staff were friendly and the beer was good. It's up a little side street with tables outside for smokers. The Crown looks to be quite an old pub that has recently been redecorated. It looks ok to me.

I had a great time talking about Penzance with staff and local people. I even got involved in a discussion about 50's sci-fi movies with some people who, I think, were putting together a quiz. There was also a nice guy that I spoke to who worked on the MV Scillonian. All in all, a friendly place with a nice atmosphere.

When in Penzance, try it out!

The Doublet Bar, Glasgow

I recently visited this pub during a brief break in Glasgow, having drank in it years ago. It was a Saturday night and it was really busy. It has a unreconstructed 60's appearance about it..The clientele were a really mixed bunch - all ages and occupations. It had a friendly atmosphere and I suspect the anti-smoking ban landlord is long gone. His predictions about the negative impact the ban would have on his pub being proved wrong. The pub is busier than ever and you can breathe in it. The staff were very friendly and there were real ales on tap. Try in when you are in the area. Jimg

The Bow Bar, Edinburgh

The Bow was a quiet refuge from am Edinburgh rub scene dominated by places full of drunken football supporters, noisy tourists and blaring televisions.
Several real ales were on tap and well looked after. The staff were courteous and there was no sign of the real ale bores who are sometime present. Well worth visiting.

Capitol, Dundee

This Lloyd's is a pub that has a habit of attracting Dundee's louts when they want to come out to play of an evening, particularly on weekends. Drink and food-wise, its great value for money with good staff. Its at its best during off-peak times of the day.

The Counting House, Dundee

This pub is a particular favourite of mine. However, it suffers from all the usual faults of a Wetherspoon's pub. Seldom enough staff behind the bar and the tables are often cluttered with the previous occupants glasses and dishes. Despite this, I like this pub because it offers the best selection of real ales in Dundee and it's staff are some of the nicest people you will meet!

The punters are a really mixed bunch - a mixture of old hardened drinkers, students and members of Dundee's 'Gadgie' community. Colourful to say the least! Try it out when you are in Dundee. I have since it opened some 10 years ago.

The Greyfriars, Perth

I am very fond of this lovely, little pub. It's main fault is that it is too small and often crowded at peak periods. The regulars are usually friendly, if somewhat loud and opinionated! There is one of the best selection of ales in the fair city and the food is supposed to be good too. I would rate this as a must to visit when you are in Perth

9 Feb 2009 16:16

Capital Asset, Perth

The local Wetherspoon's pub, this branch features all the usual pros and cons of this chain. Pros: cheap food and drink. Cons: seldom enough staff behind the bar and the tables are often cluttered with the dishes and glasses of previous customers. However, I visit this pub regularly and rate the staff as being some of the nicest people on the planet. Worth a visit.

The Half Moon, Perth

This is a recently re-opend pub that has has quite a troubled past. While It's be well renovated, I'm afraid, however, that the customers need renovation too! They are some of the loudest, sweariest set of punters that I have seen and heard for a long time! The staff seem to accept this as the status quo for this particular pub. Avoid if you like a quiet pint!
