The Clarence, Balham

I think The Clarence has shut down. So sad. Hopefully it's just a refurb!

The Selkirk, Tooting

marsden15, I apologise if I was wrong with my sausage roll comment but I stick by my comment that the food isn't as good as it was.

I love the pub and have been going there for 4 years, so is it not right that I should say if I see certain things changing for the worse? For pub food, the Selkirk has always been a bit more expensive than other pubs in the area but you never minded before because you knew that you would get a good meal and be full up at the end of it. Last week I ordered a steak and ale pie with veg and had to order chips afterwards just to feel full. The pastry felt like frozen puff pastry, but again, I apologise if I'm wrong. It seems like the chef has changed and the food isn't as good as it was, that's all.

The Selkirk, Tooting

Sadly, the food side of things seems to be changing at The Selkirk. The staff are still happy and friendly but the good pub food, which was guaranteed every time you ate there, now seems to have vanished. The homemade chicken and tarragon pies, lamb steaks, kirk burgers, and yummy risottos are sorely missed and there is now lobster on the menu (in Tooting!?). A pint of Iceland sausage rolls shouldn't be 4.

Hopefully they'll get the food back on track soon.

The Antelope, Tooting

At last, another pub in Tooting worth visiting on a Saturday night other than The Selkirk and The Tram. Great decor and nice staff. Keep up the good work.

The Swan Mountain Range Restaurant & Bar, Forest Row

Along with other members of my family, I took my mother to The Swan today for her birthday. The decor is lovely, the beer/wine was good and the restaurant is very well presented. The service and staff are a different matter.

We sat down at our table of our own accord and found that it hadn't been laid up or cleaned since the previous diners had left. The young barman in the blue shirt got out starter orders wrong, so we had a long wait between the fourth person in our group getting their starter and the sixth getting theirs. The starters were very good once we got them, especially the ribs, although two of our group didn't get the much needed finger bowls they'd been promised.

We'd seen the table next to us get their main courses at different times so two of the eight were starting as the other six had finished. Things didn't look good for us. We got the mains pretty much at the same time and the paella was very good. Unfortately we still hadn't got the two bottles of wine or the jug of water we'd asked for upon ordering so my mother had to go up and ask again. Because so much time had passed, she now just wanted the one bottle of wine. The stressed out waitress came to ask who messed up our order and then seemed intent on bollocking the young guy in the blue shirt once leaving our table.

The puddings were good when the helpful new tall waiter brought us our spoons, and we tucked in. The service had got so bad at this point that we laughed about it.

We went to pay the bill and saw that two bottles of wine were on the bill instead of one, so the young barman had a petty dig back and the waitress before asking each other what they were having for lunch.

Summary: Good food, lovely building inside and out, bloody awful service. The service should be top notch for the expensive prices that they charge. We won't go back.

A Bar 2 Far, Tooting Broadway

After stupidly popping in for a pint last weekend, the bouncers looked at myself and a friend like we were scum. I think we must have been dressed too smartly for this crap hole.

JJ Moons, Tooting

I can't see any reason to go to JJ Moons when you have some much better choices down the road.

A pub for sad/crazy/old pissheads.

The White House, Clapham Common

I went to the White House for a private party last night (a Wednesday), in the member's room upstairs. The decor was very nice upstairs and down, the staff seemed nice enough and the toilets were clean.

As much as I liked the place, I didn't like the prices. I don't mind a place not having draught lager, but to charge almost 4 for half a pint of beer in a bottle is a joke.
