The Jack and Jill Inn, Clayton

This is a very mixed review because some aspects of this pub are great and others not so great.

Was here for a funeral of a very close friend. Travelling 350 miles we stayed in the "Ensuite Accommodation" which has been recently refurbished according to their website. Well I think the refurbishment took place just before the advent of the internet because it was damp, shoddy and very dirty. They knew we were visiting 5 days prior to our arrival and so you'd think they'd make sure the room was warm on arrival. We arrived at 2pm and it took a good 8 hours to warm the room. We put the oil filled radiator on full and pulled back the bed clothes to air them off as they were cold and moist.

The shower head was held onto the pole with string, the cold tap didn't stop running and the windows were filthy (on the inside) with mould and dirt from the damp in the room. I agree it's out of season but they knew almost a week in advance about our arrival.

The good side was the bar, the food was probably the very best pub food I have ever tasted, on the pricey side yes but delicious and with hearty portions. Wine list pricey but good quality wines, not 2.99 supermarket wines hiked up to a tenner.

Garden seen better days but it is out of season. Very little mobile signal. Broadband dongles do not work here if you need to use your laptop when visiting or staying. Pub could do with adding some free wifi, especially for overnight guests.

Brandling Arms, Gosforth

A year on and here's an update. It's now onto it's 3rd bar manager and seems to be VERY quiet on an afternoon and VERY busy on weekend evenings.

Afternoon crowd can buy most of the drinks on offer much cheaper within 200 yards. Wine list is still shocking and they do a 10 wine offer on Tuesday's when every bottle is just a tenner. Most wines are 5.99-7.99 for a bottle elsewhere on the high street so even at a tenner it's s shocking price.

Not good for value, food is cooked in front of you and freshly prepared and that's it's big selling point but don't expect much change from 30 for 2 meals and 2 drinks.

The Gosforth Hotel, Gosforth

Pub has improved over last 12 but Gents toilets still rank as worst in Gosforth.

New friendlier staff since "The Skirt" moved on (gawd she was a miserable cow) and they seem less uptight since she left.

Food is ok, but it's just all reheated frozen stuff. Usually pop in most days.

The Queen Victoria, Gosforth

Only for the faint hearted, local alcoholics and chavs in trackies and rockports.

The worst of the Gosforth bars by far.

Brandling Arms, Gosforth

One of our local favourites, great atmosphere, they sell Hoegaarden which superb and Old Rosie cider, another favourite of mine.

They did a complete re-vamp of the pub last year but someone forgot to give the toilets a lick of paint. Quite strange to do the whole pub up and forget the one place where people like a bit of cleanleness.

Expensive chips and horrifically priced wine list.

The Gosforth Hotel, Gosforth

It's had a minor facelift, but the toilets rank as the worst in Gosforth. They are absolutely disgusting.

Since the facelife, the bar no longer smells like a public toilet. Jukebox is cool and Blossom Hill White at 5.99 a bottle is superb value that just can't be beaten.

Barmanager/Landlady leaves a lot to be desired, if she smiled now and again and maybe wore something other that a denim skirt everyday the atmosphere might improve.
