The Blacksmiths Arms, St Albans

The new management are really making an effort. Five real ales, generally well kept, at reasonable prices, and the loyalty cards (1 pint = 1 stamp, 6 stamps = next pint free) bring the effective price down to 2.15-2.35 per pint. Drinking in the garden is lovely, and the toilets are clean.

The Boot, St Albans

Three different pints, each costing 3.05, each mediocre, and the Gents still stinks

The Boot, St Albans

The staff are personable, but the pub is cold and dirty, and I have never known a place where the beer I order runs out so often.

The Rose and Crown, St Albans

Came here after a dismal experience in the Six Bells, and was cheered up by good service, a roaring fire and well-kept Adnams.

The welcome was non-existent. The barmaid couldn't even be bothered to in terrupt her phone call long enough to say "Sorry. I'll be with you in a tick" or some such form of words. I have difficulty in regarding this as a pub - it is rather a luncheon club that sells a bit of beer.

The Crown and Mitre, Kings Lynn

We were just in KL for a weekend and came across this gem. The nautical paraphernalia all over the pub made it look special, and the beer was up to scratch. There were 5 real ales, all well kept, and 2 absolutely first-class. The landlord, Roger, was welcoming, and a delight to talk to. Opinionated, true, but the opinions were based on knowledge and substance. Not only was the landlord welcoming, but his customers were as well, which is not normally the case when you are just passing through. The fact that we had two hours of enjoyable conversation on two nights says a lot for the atmosphere that Roger has created. Good luck with the micro-brewery.
