Bulls Head, Boreham Street

A real gem of a Harvey's pub; Hadlow, Best & Old all in very good condition. Food is reasonably priced and good as well. Definately recommended.

Flora Sandes, Thornton Heath

Having used this pub on occaisons over the years, I was utterley bemused about a change of policy form family dining. At 7.30 in the evening it is now unacceptable for anyone under 18 to eat. I was yold that this is now national policy - no mention on the JDW website. Iwas told that tthere was a notice on the door - this only refered to the childrens menu 'suitable for up to 10 years old'. The youngest of our party was 16. The duty manager tried to fob me off with changes to the law, children certificates etc. This does not explain how most proper pubs serving food manage to be far more welcoming to all.

Fish Hotel, Buttermere

The Fish is a bit of a disappointment, at least in winter, only open Thursday pm to Monday lunch in February. Only two of the handpumps in use on both occasions we were there. The large bar was sparsely populated. Must be better in Summer!

The Bridge Hotel, Buttermere

The Bridge is a welcoming Pub, with local beers from Hawkshead as well as Black Sheep and Theakstons Old Peculier. Expensive pint 3.20. Beware early closing winter weekday evenings if hotel is quiet.
A great place to end a walk on the fells.

Queen's Hotel, Ambleside

This is a hotel bar, not a traditional public house. It does however have the most varied range of locally brewed beers in Ambleside - six different breweries represented. Good food too. The cellar bar, open later in the evening also has a couple of handpumps. Worth a visit to sample the beers.

White Lion Hotel, Ambleside

The White Lion is an M&B corporate pub, which does major on food during the early evening. However the beer range, from the M&B list, but with the local Hawkshead Bitter as regular beer is very good, and the Hawkshead was in excellent condition (the best pint in Ambleside last week).

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

You may just get a 'Beer in the Evening' if you arrive at lunchtime! - The bar service is incredibly slow - I have neve before waited at a pub for 25 minutes to get served. The service is uninterested - no smile, no apologies for the wait, no welcome, short measures.
Beer quality is average, London Pride & Batemans seasonal ale on offer - Harveys off.
The only thing the GG has going for it is the location, but how I mourn its idiosyncratic former brewpub existence.

The Cricketers, Steep

We were very pleasantly surprised by the Cricketers, having walked there on the basis of the pub symbol on the map. Large one bar pub which appears to have been recently extended to offer accomodation. From the etched windows it seems to be a former Gales pub.Two beers from small breweries available and good quality. Food available but did not sample.

Seven Stars, Stroud

A traditional pub expanded into a larger roadhouse offering standard Hall & Woodhouse menu. Sunday lunch was reasonable. Beer ok but uninspiring, Efficient service at a busy time.

The Red Lion, West Meon

Only came in to get a meal, which is standard pub fare and reasonable quality. The choice of real ale was uninspiring - Greene King IPA or Bombadier at 3 per pint. Very quiet on a Saturday night when the other village pub was busy.

The Thomas Lord, West Meon

Definately a gastropub - but we didn't get the chance to pay any price for the food, as we could not be fed without a booking (on a Saturday evening). Lucky there is another pub in the village. Having said that the choice and quality of the beers on offer was excellent so we came back after eating. Surprisingly the beer was an almost realistic 2.80 per pint.

Five Bells, Buriton

This is a very good village local, with the best pint of Badger First Gold I have had in a very long time. The Ploughmans Lunch was also good. 3 a pint is a bit steep but typical of the area,

The Rock, Chiddingstone Hoath

The Rock remains totally unspoilt, and on a sunny Sunday afternoon sitting in the garden with a pint of the excellent Larkins Traditional was a joy.

The Oakfield, Croydon

Closed & boarded up

The Brook House Inn, Boot

The best place to drink in Boot; imaginative selection of beers even in winter - Landlord as a permanent, with Ram Tam making an appearance, alongside local beers.
Food is good and not too expensive. Will be even better from 1 April when it goes non-smoking throughout - in advance of the competition.

The Boot Inn, Eskdale

It is many years since I last visited the Burnmoor as it was; the lack of a cumbrian beer is a great shame. The Robinsons beer on offer was unexciting. Not a patch on other nearby pubs.

7 Mar 2007 22:45

The Blue Bell Inn, Cocking

The Blue Bell is pine furniture and wooden floors in the modern style, but does boast a Bar Billiard table and darts.
Greene King IPA & Shephad Neame Spitfire in better than average condition but an unispiring selection.

The Royal Oak, Hooksway

The Royal Oak is one of the hidden treasures of West Sussex. Certainly no passing trade - at least by road! A good range of Real Ales - mainly from local breweries in good condition.

The Fox Goes Free, Charlton

This is a splendid example of a thriving rural pub, selling good beer (including the house beer brewed by Arundel at 2 per pint) and food.
A great lunchtime break just off the South Downs.

The Sussex Ox, Milton Street

I haven't been to the Sussex Ox for three years before my visit last weekend; the food was good, the Hophead excellent and the pub was welcoming on a fairly miserable day. Shame about the lack of camping facilities now!

The Ship Inn, Morcombelake

This pub is closed & boarded up (6 oct 2006)
