The City Bar, Chester

Upstairs, I don't know...replete with impossibly trendy types, so they say...downstairs is dark and grimy, a truly great place to not care about the mounting debts and court injunctions...they, however, do a great punk night on usually a Wednesday, maybe Tuesday, who cares, Monkey Vs. Robot. Be there.

The Grosvenor Arms Aldford, Aldford

This place is wonderful, I go here whenever I can. The food is second to none (well maybe the Pant-Yr-Ochain near Wrecsam (yes it's the same menu)) and they serve many a good pint. The clientele is a bit upper crust, many would be millionaires and general money grabbers but there's plenty of good country folk also. They have a new year bash called the grib (greeb, groth, I don't know) or something, some politics about not leting locals come or maybe just my mate.

Telfords Warehouse, Chester

I concur, this is an excellent hole. I have known this place for some time now and I usually rate a place based on how many times they let me in after I've been barred. The food is quite delicious, musically they have a great selection (Sunday is good for, usually, local crap bands, occasional techno, funk, soul, reggae and all (not Sunday), again no hardcore punk but hey) and the beer is good if not a little overpriced. The thing that really gets me is the bloody attitude of the staff, well not all of them... There does seem to be a style contest or some s**t, I don't know, I don't care, I just want a drink. The place hasn't been the same since one half of one of the brothers left and they changed the door staff and it burnt down because my mate left the grill on after they barred me...ahem...erm...It is a wonderful place to drink but I always get the feeling it could be better.

RB's, Chester

If you are an alcoholic, like me, then you will need somewhere to drink after hours, this is RB's only saving grace. The staff, especially door, are very rude, except small blonde guy, usually on second floor, he is a laugh. The booze is cheap but then it is watered down so what do you expect, the place is dirty and in a bad state of repair, the toilets are not to be visited unless you must and the music is pretty bloody awful. However, it is usually full of heads which is nice and no-one really gives a s**t. One feels as if they are pushing it until they really have to refurbish the place, well there's money to be made I suppose, my money...

The Gardeners Arms, Chester

One of my favourite places for pool, I believe it's still less than 50p. The beer is equally inexspensive. They used to have folk nights which were great. I have nursed many a hangover here which perhaps adds to the surreal nature of the events that occur randomly. Many a lady has offered me mince pies (real mincemeat), sandwichs of all denominations and puddings of ancient English descent. I would frequent this place much more often if it was nearer to where I live and I hadn't been involved in that horrible drunken day debacle that left 10 men, including by no fault of my own me, barred for life.

The Frog and Nightingale, Chester

Yup, great for food (2 for10, sometimes 2 for 5, standard steak etc. others available), excellent for music with a different sound every night, no punk or reggae though...maybe that is a failing of the community and not Tony who runs a good bar...good in the sun as it has an outside area. Close to town, Tesco is close enough to make that half bottle of Vod a viable option. Also as it is by canal a sly rifter is only a short stroll away.

Red Lion, Chester

Do a good deal on beer & spirits in the week, plus you may well meet some interesting Turks. One of the barmen could take a dislike to you as he did me and bar you because his girlfriend is obviously not satisfied with his masculinity, ah well.

The Boot Inn, Chester

This is a fantastic mix of old man and young blood, not to mention Aimee, the most beautiful barmaid alive. I'm sure Emma and Sue would argue, but hey...
I frequent this place when I feel like a happy, warm time, the people are friendly no matter how drunk you get, which is easy considering it's 1.56 a pint of lager (4.3%), though I prefer the cider at 1.59 and 5.2%. If you are true hardcore why not try the D-Pils at a mighty 5.9% and a mere 2.04. My brother tells me the stout is excellent (4.5%), but we both agree unless you will drink the draught don't bother as the liquor ain't so good, the tequila is especially not palatable. Dave is a great Landlord and if it wasn't for Sam Smiths recent no music policy this could well be the best pub in Chester, Even without it is well worth a try.
