The Wells Tavern, Hampstead

Hooray! A pub for grown-ups! A pub where a girl can go in on her own and not feel like a lush! I really like the place, the food is fab (although, alas, a tad on the pricey side), and I find the bar staff really friendly.

The Elk in the Woods, Islington

Not a pub. I don't want to arrive for a drink and be told I've got 20 minutes at the table before the 8pm booking arrives for dinner. Why not take it off the site?

The Lansdowne, Primrose Hill

Last time I was there we ordered food and the posh totty behind the bar 'forgot to give the order to the chef'. She asked us if we could wait (another 20 mins in addition to the half hour we'd already waited). I said no - some of us actually have real jobs to go back to, rather than rely on daddy's money...

Kings Head, Crouch End

OK. Looks nice, but not enough seats. And in lieu of anywhere else stylish in Crouch End (why??) , the place is often full of posers who are there to be seen rather than have a good time. Great selection of beers, though.

The Rose and Crown, Stoke Newington

Great pub for grown ups who don't want to be deafened by a crappy jukebox, and who actually enjoy talking to each other over a drink. Fantastic Sunday lunches too.

Just.Awful.

Lush Camden, Camden

Nice staff, helpful and friendly. But they've just revamped the menu and they need a bit of help - the staff didn't seem sure what was on offer, and the fish coley was misspelt 'coli' on the menu, which doesn't look terribly professional.

The Enterprise, Chalk Farm

I like a tatty pub, but this is taking things too far. I feel like wiping the seats before I sit down, and when did the carpeet last have a pile? But good atmosphere, and good comedy nights upstairs.

The Hawley Arms, Camden

Top staff, top jukebox, top food and beers. A pub for grown ups, which promises to be even better after its refit.

The Good Mixer, Camden

If you can stand the smell of stale urine in Inverness Street outside the Mixer, and it's early in the week, it's worth a visit. When this pub isn't jammed with 16 year olds who think Camden still rawks, it's got a great atmosphere, fantastic jukebox, great Aussie staff and a good vibe, despite the knicker-pink walls and awful loos. However, in busy times the place gets packed, and the two pool tables mean blokes are forever going ''Scuse me, mate' as they take a shot and still ram you in the back with a cue. And it's cold. Maybe best avoided by those over 30.
