The Anchor, Henley-On-Thames

Rediscovered the Anchor on a small pub crawl around Henley towards the end of last summer. Also spent most of a long weekend there in November based on the first visit. It's a fantastic pub - and what's more a real pub which is becoming increasingly rare these days. We were well looked after by all the staff and enjoyed several days of banter, darts, good food, great booze and fun. They could not have been more accommodating - even gave us a plate free roast potatoes when were having a hair of the dog on the last Sunday session of the weekend.
I cannot understand the negative reviews on here, particularly about the staff, as we have always been made very welcome. Drank there from opening to around 8pm every day of the weekend so we were exposed to all the staff and the comings and goings of the pub. Lagers and Ales kept well and food was great traditonal pub grub - just what was needed to sustain us on the long sessions.
We are off there again in a few weeks for the bank holiday weekend and looking forward to it.

The Good Companions, Brighton

I go to this pub every time im in Brighton as a friend lives nearby.
I love it. Its a proper pub. Good bar staff. I've had several all dayers there and always make a beeline for it as soon as I get to Brighton.
Its like an estate pub - but not.. hard to describe really.

If you don't like a pub where you get people drinking, smoking playing fruit machines and being loud then you wont like it.

The Melton Mowbray, Holborn

The Melton is a great pub but it has become a victim of its own success. A couple of years ago it used to be easy enough to get a pint on a Friday night.
Now its always rammed with part time drinkers.
Can be hard to get a seat most nights these days.

Still a good place though with a good mix of people. Bar staff are all great and service is quick and efficient.
Beers alright.
Gents toilets stink - really stink.
Pleasant atmosphere. Good male to female ratio.
( Any pub with all female staff is worth visiting in my book ! )

Its also in marching distance of Secrets and the Griffin.

Always busy in the summer. It's not too bad as everyone spills out onto the street to watch the afternoon parade of city girls going home.

Roll on summer..

The place is definitely better than the sum of its parts. I've had some great nights there and go all the time so my rating may be slightly biased..

The Coach and Horses, Marlow

I can only echo Muntjac's comments below.
This is a great pub if you like local chilled pubs.

I love the fact I can sit there drinking and have a Chinese delivered to the same table.

Good old pub feel to the place with regulars and the odd dog lurking about.

The Marlow Donkey, Marlow

It has changed. Lost some of its old 'proper pub' charm though. Pool table has gone and has been replaced with a non-smoking dining area.

Food has definitely improved. Sunday roast is good ( fair size ) as is the mixed grill. I was most impressed with the black pudding.

Always busy these days with lots of new faces so the changes have obviously gone down well.

It's gone a bit more upmarket, but I think 'sophisticated' is a bit of a stretch.
Lots of leather sofas and a real fire.

OUT - Pool table, TV's, grease, my favourite seats
IN - More seated dining areas, a wall of wine, Lots more people, better food

The Test Match, West Bridgford

I also spent a new year there and remember a bald brummie dancing on the stage and staggering about much to the dismay of the band. He looked terrible too.
Was a very good new year though.
A very welcoming pub even thought we were very drunk and very rowdy.

The Marlow Donkey, Marlow

My local. Used to be absolutely brilliant a few years ago when a Scottish family ran it. Went downhill a lot after they left. New landlord took over about six months ago and is trying to turn things around. Seemed to be working last time I went as there were defiantly new faces around.

I have always liked the pub though. Stella is good. Little TV's dotted around the place and a pool table.
Food is what you'd expect. Big portions absolutely swimming in grease but just the job when your drunk.

Its not a posh pub and its not a scum pub. Just your average in-between boozer. Big and roomy a good place for a lads all dayer. Don't think you'd win many points taking your missus there for a romantic meal though, even though they have started putting candles on the table in the evening.

It may really come into its own this summer as they have finally put benches outside.
