The White Lion, St Albans

Another great beer festival has kicked off here for the Bank Holiday weekend. 20 barrels of real ale and burgers in the garden - fantastuloba! The festival is being shared with the White Hart Tap down the road, where there are 10 barrels.

The Grape and Grain, Crystal Palace

I felt threatened even in the middle of the day. Dreadful place. Horrifying, even.

The Three Fishes, Shrewsbury

The middle of Shrewsbury is surprisingly lacking in good pubs, IMHO. This is definitely one of the better ones.

The Farmers Boy, St Albans

I come to praise the Farmer's Boy, not to bury it, but my previous 2 messages didn't even get posted. Why?

The Red Lion, Radlett

This place has a slightly odd atmosphere, but really it's a hotel bar rather than a proper pub. Service is good and the beers are well kept: the full range of Youngs ales, including Waggledance, which I rather overdosed on. Nurse, the screens!

The Estcourt Arms, Watford

Could be the best pub in Watford. It's nothing fancy, just a well-run 2-bar place with a good food menu, 4 beers and welcoming barstaff. (I had 2 pints of Adnams bitter plus some lunch, and walked out feeling great.)

The Boot, St Albans

A shining jewel. The centre of St Albans is surprisingly lacking in decent pubs, apart from the Boot, White Swan and - time will tell - revamped Fleur de Lys.
The great things about the Boot include tip-top beers, keen staff (usually) and a friendly atmosphere.
When grossly sloshed I give it 10/10, but more generally an easy 8/10.

The Cross Keys, St Albans

Pub opens at 1000 or thereabouts, and customers appear immediately! There are much worse Wetherspoons places than this one. Cheap booze, reasonable food, but the barstaff are grossly overstretched.
