The Jolly Sailor, Farnham

Visited here twice this week to a refurbished and re-launched venue. The interior has had an excellent facelift and is of a very high spec finish. The semi-nautical theme is easy on the eye and the fittings & furnishings are of the highest quality, making it homely and comfortable throughout. An excellent decked area to the front and a secluded garden to the rear make pleasant retreats for relaxing in. Very well prepared food. Made with care and attention, not generic "gastro pub" rubbish, but tasty and flavoursome. Beers well kept, well priced and with great variety. Wine at a reasonable pub price, friendly and genuinely caring staff make it a pleasure to drink and dine here.

Plough, Farnham

came here, didn't hate it.
Garden is lovely, bar area clean, locals seem to be waiting for god, but it's a nice visit.
Will return for some ale and see if it's drinkable, bottles drinks seem to be ok.

The Nelson, Farnham

Finally tried here after years of believing it was over 25s only (apparently I was wrong) and having moved away before the age bar was reached and was very pleased with the whole place. Drinks are of top quality, all the ales are well kept and presented, excellent to find Tanqueray being served the RIGHT way (cucumber and ice, slimline and no citrus please). Tidy garden kept clean but could try harder to make it more interesting and a lovely heritage interior. slightly manic on carnival night, but that's to be expected. Food appears well portioned and rapidly delivered although I've yet to sample a proper meal.

Queens Head, Farnham

Always worth a visit for a pint or two on the way round the town. When empty it shows the need for a decent cleaner, but the beer is good, the service polite and there seems to be a remarkable lack of fisticuffs, suggesting it's a safe choice. Will be going back here to rent more beer. Gorgeous but tiny beer garden is well worth a visit.

The Coach and Horses, Farnham

Formerly a reasonable hostelry this is now as nice as Satan's armpit. Vile Tapas crap, avoid like a suppurating boil.

Wheat Sheaf Public House, Farnham

appears to be a 1950s railway station waiting room in disguise. No soul, very bland and dull. Probably more lively in the evenings with some drinking mates and your best beer goggles on. Shame as it was one of the best pubs in Farnham in the 1990s

Royal Oak, Wrecclesham

Quick after-dinner stop off for a drink here showed it to be a pleasant watering hole, with a varied but not oversized or overpriced menu. Atmosphere was friendly and the garden a very relaxing place, with extensive diversions for the smaller members of your party.

The Hen and Chicken, Upper Froyle

After driving past for ages, decided to try Sunday carvery here. Big Mistake. Meats: Dry/overcooked/tasteless. Veg: overcooked and insipid. Poor lack of accompaniments, cold and very much overpriced. Clientele seems to be octogenarian at the younger end, perhaps it's a last-meal-before-God kind of place? Needless to say, won't be stopping here again. As a final Pice de Rsistance, a lovely large dog egg adorned the beer garden which was also home, strangely, to an un-fenced trampoline nestled up close to a tree for all your "day trip to A&E" needs.

The William Cobbett, Farnham

Younger crowd, clearly inspired to visit due to its proximity to the local college gives this pub it's gritty student-bar feel. Food prices seem reasonable and the portions larger than expected. Evening crowds tend to be "eclectic" in nature with a surprising range of ages. Not bad for a drop-in occasional visit, but does not cater for all tastes, although that is not in itself a bad thing. Would visit again during the day, maybe not so much in the evening as the clientele are not the kind that I would personally fraternize with.

The White Horse, Haslemere

Last minute visit here resulted in a rather pleasant meal.
Bar staff: pleasant
Drinks: good quality and in keeping with modern times for prices.
Food: Well presented, great quality and temperature. nicely varied menu and great deserts.
Overall, a nice refreshing change to previous visits and I would recommend a further visit. Nice to see an improvement in a pub in the area!!

Apple Tree, Haslemere

A chance stop-by, late on a Sunday evening showed this to be a pleasant and unpretentious small pub.

The local Poker evening was in session with it's accompanying food for the players, creating a garlic-bread-scented ambiance which is not for the weak of stomach!

The beers appear to be the current fad of a selection of glitzy-looking lad's lagers on shiny chrome taps, no hand-pumped ale in evidence.

Prices are very reasonable for the area, almost in competition with the nearby Weatherspoon's. Menu appeared average, unpredictable pub grub, albeit at lower than expected prices.

Interior generally of the "comfy home" style rather then any fake olde-worldy rubbish, was clean and very relaxing. Juke box was playing some good music from a wide range, and not surprisingly nobody was watching the sport on either of the 2 big screens.

Nice outdoors choice of beer garden/terrace (dodgy decking, beware if you are in heels!) or street-side tables. An ideal location for meeting mates for beers or ending an evening with a low-stress drink.

The Jolly Farmer, Puttenham

ok, so after being fooled by glitzy television adverts I made the mistake of visiting here in the vain hope that it wouldn't suck. Sadly, I was wrong as it was a dreadful visit. The awful soulless chain nature of the brand was immediately obvious. (Just to be clear, I'm not a foodie or a restaurant snob, I didn't expect the Ritz, but I hoped that in the 3 years since the last review that it might have changed). the outside of the place looks like it was shabby in 1990, and has never been revamped since. the tables outdoors are falling apart and filthy. After a lengthy wait for some overpriced soft drinks I had to wait 15 minutes to be seated at one of the several empty tables. the salad cart was tired, but the mains were truly awful. Ribs that are 50% bone and 60% fat, chicken that looks like it's not had a drink in weeks it was so dry, was supposed to be "smothered" in sauce but the only thing covered in a "sticky" anything was the table. The loos were fearful, dirty, proper dirty. The floor swimming in wet, soap that had clearly exploded and a lovely finishing touch of a toilet brush coated thoroughly in *brown* were the highlights. this was a serious mistake to visit, the manager couldn't give a fig, so I don't think I will either. A-V-O-I-D!!!!!!

The George, Temple

used to do a "comedy" review show upstairs on a Tuesday evening. Lacking in comedy, only the overpriced beer gave any redemption to an otherwise dull evening. Not worth a long trip to visit.

The Royal Oak, Haslemere

quick detour here for a swift sharpener resulted in a rather splendid pint of pride, another of a well-served fosters and a pleasant half hour's visit to a lovely country pub. Food looked and smelled great, menu prices seemed very reasonable and the staff polite and swift. Will be returning here again very soon.

The White Horse, Haslemere

Slow to be delivered food and badly cared for ales are two reasons to avoid this watering hole. Two more are the prices that are above average and cleanliness that is well below.
Unpalatable meal and cloudy beer on the last trip suggest that it will probably be just that.

7 May 2010 17:25

The Swan Hotel, Haslemere

this Wetherspoons chain pub is fairly typical of the breed. Reheated-in-a-microwave meals that are more fuel than food and a somewhat lackluster approach to cleaning tend to make a visit here to be somewhat less rewarding than watching emulsion dry. However the real ales are well-kept meaning that you can hide behind your beer goggles and forget about the lack of decor and have fun instead. Friday nights tend to be rowdy but entertaining. The smoking ban has not helped as there is now nothing to mask the natural odour of mildew that seems to hang about the place. A refueling stop rather than a destination of choice, perhaps.

The Crown and Cushion, Haslemere

This is a great "locals" pub, full of atmosphere and life on the right evening. It doesn't dress itself up as a gastropub or a haute-cuisine experience, but it is honest and welcoming as a proper working pub should be. The regulars seem to be friendly and the beer is well-kept. Overall a good place to stop out for the evening if you want a relaxed atmosphere in a spit-and-sawdust PROPER pub.

7 May 2010 17:16

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Grayswood

during the day this is a haven for SAGA outings and OAP coachtrips. The staff are unfriendly towards non-regulars or anyone under 65. the decor is tired and in need of repair, wallpaper peeling off and simply missing in places. The food was overpriced and looking at one table, overcooked and possibly inedible. The pint of pride that I sampled was decidedly average, lacking the usual sparkle and freshness that I expect from a normally excellent beer, and the stella was pretty much the same. I will not be returning here, despite it being close enough to me to walk.
