The Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington

The doorman at the Holiday Inn recommended this place to us. Beer good and found the bar staff helpful despite the place being extremely busy (Sunday afternoon). After a couple of hours we managed to get a table for what was a later than planned lunch. Food was excellent.

The Northfield House Hotel, Edinburgh

My local. Has two bars - one with large screen TV and the other which might best be described as a lounge bar. The latter is a good place to have a pint and do the Scotsman crossword/sudoku. Not too much choice in the way of ales but the Guiness is good. Restaurant is OK. Mortonhall Crematorium is less than a mile away so don't be phased but lots of people wearing black!

The Tickled Trout, Edinburgh

Nice position by the Water of Leith - just across the road from the Water of Leith Visitor Centre. Mostly serves food these days. Has an outdoor area by the river which is very pleasant on a sunny day.

Carrick Knowe Inn, Edinburgh

Three large screen screen TVs usually showing Horse Racing during the afternoon. William Hills (bookmaker) less than 50 meters away. Pleasant enough shop.
