Man of Ross Inn, Ross-on-Wye

Walked around town on a rainy Aug bank hol Friday before plumping for the Man of Ross. Their confident publicity around their fish dishes lured us in - and the fish and chips was very tasty indeed. Nice batter with black pepper in it, and good chips. The Doom Bar (yes, now a bit overexposed, but still tasty) was fine.

They were in the process of getting set up for a cider festival. The barman explained the ciders to a fellow patron in some detail, concluding "now this one's a blackcurrant cider, that's more of a woman's drink". Made me chuckle.

Slight aroma of cleaning product, and piped local radio in the 'small 'dining room', but we enjoyed our grub along with the convivial surroundings. You could do far worse.

The Hand and Shears, Barbican

Bar staff fine and attentive; beer selection a bit limited; lovely little building but shame about the suited and booted clientele, who probably spend more money than I do there, but were, well, a bit annoying.

The Town of Ramsgate, Wapping

Mixed reviews left me in a bit of a quandary when choosing a Wapping pub for a Father's Day lunch. Plumped for the Ramsgate in the end - and we weren't disappointed. A genuinely yummy pint of Doom Bar (Youngs, Pride, HPA also on offer) and a tasty carvery (pork the pick of the three meats on offer). Friendly landlord too.

Perhaps not the East End den of iniquity that it once was, and maybe better for a Sunday afternoon than last orders on a boozy Friday, but we left satisfied.

The Six Bells, St Albans

Visited the SIx Bells late lunchtime on a Saturday in search of some decent but unpretentious pub grub and a nice pint. We weren't disappointed. Food was yummy but not gastro (and I mean that as a compliment), service was good (if made harder by a gaggle of locals colonising the bar - but I spose it is sort of their pub) and we enjoyed the Rev James and the Buntingford Highwayman they had on tap.

Highly recommended - although don't eat for at least six hours. Portions are massive!

The Beehive, Vauxhall

there is nothing groundbreaking about this pub in the slightest - but it's alright. the beer tastes fine (Youngs and Pride), and last time i was there the barmaid remembered a five-drink order (right down to a no-ice matter), which counts for something.

Fine for a few beers if you're around. Don't make a special journey, though.

The Edgar Wallace, Temple

Top notch pub, this one. Great ale selections and the food looks rather nice. Does obstruct the public highway rather during the summer months. Def worth a visit - and better (if busier ergo less seats going) than the more-than-reasonable (minus the food) Devereux.

The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane

Certainly an anthropological goldmine - where lawyers go to die (or at least to get themselves through sunday evening) and the nature of hospitality proffered is very much of the Marmite variety.

Can't complain on factual grounds with many of the gripes expressed on these pages, but I've got to say that i like this place, particularly when sat on the kerb opposite with a pint of a nice beer from Sussex, a drinking buddy/life partner and the evening sun on your face. Quite novel resting your pint on the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice too.

Definitely worth a pint or three here, make your own mind up. It's certainly unique.

The King and Keys, Fleet Street

Very sad that this pub has turned into a burrito joint.

Quality landlord. Don't recall the beers being much to write home about, but that is possibly compensated for by the genius of combining curry night and quiz night (a nice korma at half time....). The regular karaoke was also pretty special and we felt privileged to be part of the last night ever at the K&K, which was topped off by three bottles of a crate of beer shipped in at stupid o'clock to top up flagging supplies being rung up as the non-divisible-by-three 10. THe barmaid just shrugged when confronted with the mathematical dilemma.

We paid 10.

Rating submitted posthumously.

The City Retreat, Holborn

Ronseal pub. Which is a good thing, really...

The Cartoonist, Holborn

Fair dos, there are better pubs in this part of town. The beer is a little pricey, and I expect this is in order to survive on the sliver of Mon-Fri business this place shaves off its more cosmopolitan neighbours. However, the staff are generally friendly and I've had some nice pints of various incarnations of Adnams in here. They also show football and the pub is rarely populated densely enough to obscure your view...

A funny place, all in all , but not all bad.

The Cockpit, Blackfriars

yet to sample the scotch eggs but did enjoy catching the rugby here on a damp saturday afternoon. No issues re beer and the staff were very friendly. Recommended

The Tipperary, Fleet Street

Nice enough for a few pints of the black stuff. A couple of the inevitable besuited folk from the surrounding area doing something distasteful with vodka and oysters (ie eating them out of the same glass - money can't buy you taste) but friendly attentive staff, on a Tuesday anyway. Good pork scratchings too.

Not the biggest, but worth a visit if you're passing. A little quieter than the echoey cellar bars of the Cheshire Cheese across the way.

The Devereux, Temple

Certainly in agreement regarding the food issue. Microwaved pasta (or so it seemed at least) is really not a good look. And although the staff were friendly, the service did not inspire confidence.

Positive points included the cosiness of the pub itself, the fab location and the tasty seasonal beers. Come and drink by all means but hold on to your pint as it gets near the bottom. And stick to the crisps in the food department.

The Angel in the Fields, Bond Street

Once it gets dark, it can get a bit dingy in here. And if you're tempted by the free room hire upstairs, where the bizarre shape of the building is even more evident, it will only be staffed if busy enough and you can't have any music up there.

However, downstairs is what it's all about here. And when the sun gets low in the sky on a summer's evening and pours through the fantastic stained glass as one sups one's pint, it's a unique and quite wonderful place. and cheap too. Go!

The Bloomsbury Tavern, Bloomsbury

Tasty beers here. Was a nice warm refuge from the perils of Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon and the bar snacks were honestly priced. Good chips too.

Pleasant and revisitable boozer.

Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, Swiss Cottage

i've always found this pub to be more than adequate for a good-value post-cinematic pint after frequenting the Odeon next door. convenient location (if not the best spot for a pub with balconies), and the food is, in my experience, very tasty. beer is as good as one would expect of Sam Smiths. Best boozer in an area not overflowing with alternatives...

The Dragon, Nottingham

Funny gastro-stripped-down-old-pub-local fusion. But it does work and the bar staff were nice when i was last there. Can get a bit draughty in mid-December, but still a comfortable boozer which is rarely intimidating (youth oriented Nottingham city centre pub? Not intimidating? REALLY?) and well worth a visit.

The Goat Tavern, Piccadilly

Thoroughly approve of this place. Good ales, the legendary Deuchars among them. Last time we were there the kitchen was closed so the chef went to Tescos and came back with a bumper pack of cocktail sausages which he insisted everyone shared round. Later, a small mouse popped out of a large hole in the wooden panelling, wandered around for a bit, then crept back in. You can't buy that kind of thing. Particularly in Zone 1. A cracking pub.

The Westminster Arms, Westminster

Big fan of the booths downstairs, but this pub is a little on the pricey side and despite some niceish ales it somehow just doesn't feel right.

Incidentally, you don't have to be a civil servant to drink here but it certainly helps.

The Brazen Head, Lisson Grove

On the basis of many months catching the footie in this pub I was quite prepared to staunchly defend it. Friendly landlady, plentiful seating and a regular with a dog just like the one off "Woof!". However following a recent refit things have changed, for the homogenised 'clean modern lines' worse. All that remains the same is the view out the window above the urinals in the gents. A few too many after-work suits in here now.

Gutted. Me and the pub both.
