The Coachmakers Arms, Hanley

I'm afraid 'Martinish', that you have the wrong end of the stick with this place, perhaps you need to re-visit.
This place is far the best boozer in the area, let alone Hanley! And this ins't due to lack of competition but because of its uniqueness.

A pub must differentiate itself for it to become interesting and thus become a desirable place to visit, drink and enjoy. Quirky inconveniences such as the mechanics on the door, and a hatchway where to order your beer, are the sort of things that make this place a gem (a short trip through the back courtyard to find the Gents is another). Too many pubs consist of one big room behind one big fire door....not this place. This is full of several small individual rooms, that all offer something different; books, a piano, board games, and local characters. I am not local anymore but still visit knowing that a stranger might start up a conversation or tell a joke or two. The Coachmakers hasn't achieved this uniqueness by doing anything special, it just hasn't conformed with modern minimilisation, and to its credit, stands out because of this.

This place is one shining light in the Stoke area and should be cherished. A drinkers pub with top selection of ale and cider. 10/10

The Crown Hotel, Framlingham

Popped in for a pint over the weekend...dissapointed enough to only see Greedy King IPA and Ruddles (ruined by GK) County on, but infact they wern't even available (do bar staff not know how to change a barrel?). The building itself has the potential to be fantastic but it lacked something, I don'think enough thought went into the layout....for instance a large light hanging in the window! Surely the main purpose of a window is to allow light in? Anyway had an Aspalls out of some nancy San Miguel goblet glass and some expensive (multipack - not to be sold separately) crisps.

The Greyhound Inn, Newcastle Under Lyme

A range of well kept ales mostly from titanic and everards but also a guest ale. The inside is attractive and the staff are friendly, sociable and up for a laugh. There is a folk night and pork pies are always available. The place is busy over weekends and the locals are inviting and chatty. One of the best places to drink in newcastle. 8/10

The Barley Mow Inn, Kirk Ireton

Recently spent a fine evening here whilst camping locally. This place hasn't changed for years and years and the landlady, mary, is the same since 1973. The interior as wel as exterior is timeless and just what a country pub should be. We sat outside on the grass in late June drinking out of the heaviest thick glassed pint jugs i've ever seen. Whilst we were there (from opening til close) about 5 cars went passed and 1 horse and cart. 6 beers to choose from all of which come straight from the cask and 'no lagers' (excellent) except for bottled pilsner. 1 of the ales from the cellar is brought up to the tiny bar in a plastic jug to avoid multiple visits down the stairs (which is understandable for a little old landlady). The rest (including sharps doombar, but i cant remember the others) are on stillage behind the bar. Snacks are simple (1 flavour crisps and nuts) and i believe food is done for those in the B&B at the rear. Pints are cheap at 2.50 and the till used is a wooden draw beneath the bar. We chatted to the landlady for a while as we helped her close-up, and she was pleasant and informative, even showing us her dog.

The next morning waiting outside the pub to catch the daily bus service, the landlady's other half offered us a lift to Cromford because he was going vaguely in that direction. He informed us Mary won't let him do anything to do with the pub.

This place is an absolute gem and should never change. 10/10

The Old Inn, Carbost

This place is an absolute gem for Skye. Remote in superb scenery, a good selection of real ales and good food. It's the sort of place i can imagine some good highland music taking place much to the delight of locals and tourists. Wish i had stayed longer but will return this year 9/10

The Prince of Wales, Foxfield

Dropped in on a wet and windy cumbrian day. There was a fine selection of local and specialist ales on, i had a nettle ale from foxfield, physics from brew dog, and foxfields mild. Had a superb list of whiskies and a few ciders. The bar billiands is a sussex version and not the one i'm used to which caused some laughs. The interior is 'different' but you have the feeling that's just the way it's been for years.

Ship Inn, Coniston

Just outside the main part of coniston but a pleasant walk along the old railway line. The ship is mostly aimed for eaters but does offer 2 good real ales (they lack imagination but kept well). The pub decor is a little boring and would be better adopting a classic walkers bar, but there u go. The service was good and the food relatively basic but good value and yummy.

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Visited 2 weeks ago. This place is the answer to the disapointment which is the Black Bull. Excellent real ales and a varying choice with lists up outside. The food was also superb (i had pork). Keep your eyes open for their signs on the main street because this place is hidden up the hill a little with great views of the surrounding peaks.

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

Sadly this boozer has lost its way a little. I admit it is in a nice location on the road through Coniston and has space to sit outside. However this is no reason to overcharge for beers (it must be the delivery costs from the brewey 50yards away!), food (a small piece of fish with some stale bread), and a place that promises such character simply delivers a plane nothingness.

A pub with huge potential but due to a guarenteed passing trade it is more than dissapointing

The Bull's Head, Newcastle under Lyme

characterful little boozer. always a good quest ale on. regular beers are old speckled hen and bass (i think). the locals are interesting and a good laugh. the seating area out the back was lovely to relax in with a few pints this summer

Yates's, Newcastle under Lyme

no beer, rude service, awful food....it sounds like a yates's pub! i went in on a cold evening and was asked to remove my coat and hat by a security guard. it rather shoot myself in the foot than return here!

Arnold MacHin, Newcastle under Lyme

A standard spoons pub tbh. beer range appears to be getting worse from its diversity of a few years ago. a nice location in town but atmosphere is damp and only worth it on a friday night if you love queing more than u do drinking

Fluid, Newcastle under Lyme

not a pub...good as a club if u fancy anything from a good night to a fight

The Boat and Horses, Newcastle under Lyme

This place used to be my local, pretty unambitious with it's beers but the addition of a guest ale recently is a pleasant change and the food is good and not pricey. Is a short walk fromt he town centre but with its blue paint-work is easily recogniseable. Will have to pop in again soon.
