The Old Windmill, Coventry

Unlike the chav-infested bars nearby on Coventry's "Medieval Spon Street", the Old Windwill is a bit of a gem. Attracting an *extremely* mixed clientele of party goers, Goths, bikers, students, and real ale drinkers, everyone is welcome to take in the historic atmosphere, drink the fine selection of beers, and listen to the random mix of tunes on the jukebox. Could really do with a good scrub and some new furniture though.

The Field House, Solihull

Given its inauspicious location in the middle of a large modern housing estate, The Fieldhouse is actually a pretty decent local pub. Part of the Ember Inns chain, they usually have at least 5 real ales on and the food is reasonable pub grub (if not gastro standard). Quiz every Tuesday and Sunday night. Watch out - this place gets absolutely packed if you don't get there early on quiz night, and bar service can be slow at times, but the staff are very friendly.

The Tap and Spile, Birmingham

The Tap and Spile ought to be one of the best pubs in Birmingham but is let down by the run-down condition of the pub and variable service. Although the pub has a lovely setting by the canal side and a sociable atmosphere very different from the drinking circuit pubs of Broad Street nearby, and a good range of (generally) well kept ales; the place is spoiled by the utterly filthy and worn out decor, broken furniture, and disgusting toilets.
