The Iron Duke, Victoria station

Ordered a pint of Guinness. Head was too big. So member of bar staff topped the pint up with water. 4.20. Wouldn't go there again if I was on the verge of death from dehydration.

The Rose and Crown, Belgravia

My most recent visit was just before last orders on a Saturday night and it was a sight for sore eyes. Then again, I had just stormed out of a Wetherspoon's (I know, I know, I should know better). One that I'd definitely like to visit a little more to get a real feel for it.

The Barley Mow, Westminster

Probably the best pub in the area but - given the other pubs in the area - that's not saying much. That said, I've never had a bad day / night in here, so that's something. One word of warning, though: if you're not a Chelsea fan, probably best to steer clear if there's a Chelsea match on, particularly if you value your hearing.

The Puzzle, Westminster

A year ago, this was a fair place to go, particularly for weekend football watching. It attracted some of the more colourful local characters, which more than made up for its prices, understaffing and poor decor and furnishings. This spring, the manager sacked all the staff who'd made an effort to make the place work, and most of the pub's regulars decided it was time to go elsewhere. The final straw for me personally was walking in to watch the last Arsenal vs. Chelsea game (usually a bonanza day for all landlords in the area) to find that the pub was closed for a children's party. No, really. With an economic outlook like that, it's no wonder that this pub now remains closed at the weekend, which ultimately means that it's a waste of prime real estate space. My rating would be 8 for the good times, but those days are gone...

The Gallery, Pimlico

I arrived at 10:50 to be told by the barmaid that I had just made it in time. Another member of bar staff tried to get me to leave at 11:10.

Considering that you can't even walk on the pavement past the place most nights, thanks to the post-work netball / volleyball / anythingwithaball crowd, you would think they'd be more welcoming when the pub is less busy. They're not.

It's seen better days, this place. Shame.

The Cask, Pimlico

The night I stopped off for a quiet drink there were about six other people in this pub, including four 20-somethings who spent most of the time chasing each other around the pub. One took umbrage at something another said, smashed his glass and left. The others, meanwhile, including the man I considered to be the landlord, went outside to have a play fight and a fag. Don't know why, when the barmaid considered herself totally justified to light up inside the pub.

A blot on the landscape that should be razed to the ground. Given its clientele, it probably will be very shortly.

Oh, and there was no soap in the lavs.

The Page, Pimlico

Sat down in there this evening to watch the Wales match, only for four tourists to arrive 15 minutes later demanding to watch Italy vs. France. The barman gave into them. Apparently, the contribution that tourists can make to this pub in one evening is more important to its coffers than a local looking for a new place to drink can make for it in a lifetime. Two stars for having the match on in the first place instead of MTV, News 24, The X Factor, The Last Night of the Proms or nothing at all like the other pubs in the neighbourhood, and for at least having the decency to refund my money. Won't be going there ever again, though.
