The Travellers Friend, Woodford Green
Went to this pub for the first time, and was surprised by the friendliness of the place. Not what I was expecting after some of the reviews. The place didn't go silent, I was served with a smile by the landlady, and was free to enjoy a quiet drink with my girlfriend. The ale is excellent, probably the best of any pub in the area. Servers 4 bitters plus a guest ale.

Cheap, excellent beer and sky sports (thought this was banned from Wetherspoons pubs). Better than average.

Great beer, untouched by commercialism, and a very cosy "locals" pub. The best in the area.

If you can imagine the show "Essex Wives" and the type of pub that would come to, then this is it. And I believe this bar made it into the series. Boys from Chigwell with rich daddies parking their MGs, after cruising down Queen's Road a number of times, arm in arm with Bling Orange coloured "Footballers Wife" stereotype. Throw in a bit of house music, overpriced beer, and even (I kid you not) Bernard Manning making the odd live appearance.

The Three Colts, Buckhurst Hill
Great little country pub within 5 minutes walk of a tube station (can't think of many pubs that would fit that description). Has excellent real-ale, a beer garden, a pool room, and just a small scattering of locals make for a very relaxing evening. The antithesis of the orange-MG driving-Chigwell bridgade "Blue Monday" on Queen's Road.

The White Hart, South Woodford
A dirty old boozer, but that works in its favour as you're guaranteed a table on a Friday night.

As a pub, it's a typical Harvester - sterile, tepid, terrible selection of beer.

The Railway Bell, South Woodford
Has received unfair slack from other reviewers. A straightforward Wetherspoon-type value pub. Big screen, cheap beer, unobtrusive locals. Perfect for a quick pint on the way home from the tube station.

Always a queue of under-age drinkers unsuccessfully trying to persuade the bouncer to let them in. Nobody over 21 here on the weekends, but better during the week.

A classic 70-style carpets type pub, but crying out for a jukebox.

The Crown and Crooked Billet, Woodford Green
Very disappointed when I walked into this for the first time. From the outside, it looks promising - like a warm, country pub. Inside, however, it resembles a Harvester, and appears to be a chain by all accounts. Just one real ale on tap, and a distinctly stale, tapid atmosphere. A shame, as it probably was very good before it became a chain.
